Super Al’s Cocktail Sauce

  4.9 – 404 reviews  • Sauces

Brats are a traditional part of Wisconsin summertime picnics. These are a variation on the classic grilled brat. I’ve discovered that once folks sample them, they quickly become a favorite.

I used prepared horseradish (genuinely not sure if raw horseradish is something different that I should be able to find in the store, but I didn’t investigate and just used what I had) and got rave reviews. It was perfect and tasted exactly how I’d expected/ hoped!

I tripled the recipe because I like to have extra. I did cut way back on the horseradish as I like it but seeing how much that was called for made me wary. I mixed the other ingredients together first and added prepared horseradish by the teaspoon until it tasted right. I’m guessing the tablespoons that it called for should have been teaspoons instead because I like horseradish a lot and that would have been way too much. I also added some granulated garlic powder for a bit more flavor. I also decided it need a bit of saltiness and added Tajin, a spice I try to always have in my cupboard. It is a spicy lime type salty spice. I really will make this recipe from now on, with my changes of course.

Hot spice is not usually my thing– this cleared out my sinuses!! But it is really, really good. I am the only seafood eater in my house so I didn’t want to buy a jar of sauce, since I had already indulged myself buying the shrimp. I mixed in finely chopped celery with small shrimp, and ate it on toast for lunch. So good!

So simple and so delicious. The only thing different from how I usually made my cocktail sauce was the brown sugar, what a difference that made!

Simple and delicious. Adjust horseradish to suit the tastes of your guests. Going to be my standard cocktail sauce.

SO GOOD! We add Tobasco, only because we add tobasco to everything!

I didn’t use as much horseradish as recommended and it was still very good. I loved the bit of brown sugar to tame the sauce.
