Tennessee Whiskey Sweet Potato Casserole

  4.5 – 4 reviews  • Sweet Potato Casserole Recipes

Brown sugar, Tennessee whiskey, and candied pecans flavor the sweet potato casserole. A traditional holiday dish that has been in my family for many years is given a rich and comforting makeover. It has always been served at Thanksgiving, as far back as I can remember. Make sure to completely drain potatoes of water for the best results.

Ingredients

  1. 3 quarts water
  2. 2 ½ cups diced sweet potato
  3. ¾ cup brown sugar
  4. ⅓ cup Tennessee whiskey
  5. ¼ cup butter, softened
  6. 2 ¼ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  7. 2 ¼ teaspoons ground nutmeg
  8. 1 teaspoon salt
  9. ¼ cup butter
  10. ¾ cup brown sugar
  11. 1 ½ cups chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
  2. Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Cook sweet potatoes in boiling water until tender, about 7 minutes; drain. Transfer potatoes to a large mixing bowl; mash with a potato masher until smooth. Add 3/4 cup brown sugar, Tennessee whiskey, 1/4 cup softened butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the potatoes; stir to incorporate. Spread mixture into a 1-quart casserole dish.
  3. Melt 1/4 cup butter in a small skillet over low heat. Stir 3/4 cup brown sugar into the melted butter until incorporated. Add pecans to skillet; cook and stir until the pecans are completely coated in the butter mixture, 2 to 3 minutes. Top sweet potato mixture with the pecans.
  4. Bake in preheated oven until browned around the edges, about 25 minutes.

The whole family loves when I make them. They have become a requested Thanksgiving dish.

Great recipe but way too much sugar. The second try, I bumped it down to 1/2 cup in sweet potatoes and 1/2 cup in topping and it was still on the very sweet side.

This was a great new side to try! I followed it as written. I wish a little more of the whiskey had cooked off for myself. However, don’t let this scare you away! I loved it and will make it again.

I’ve had this dish several times now and it’s always fantastic & a crowd-pleaser. It has just the right amount of crunch thanks to the pecans and the whiskey nicely rounds out the flavor profile.
