Hibiscus Syrup

Using cinnamon, nuts, and fresh apples, this recipe for apple bars comes together quickly. They are excellent, and at my place, they rarely last a day!

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups water
  2. ½ cup white sugar
  3. ⅓ cup dried hibiscus flowers
  4. ¼ cup brown sugar
  5. 1 (1/2 inch) piece fresh ginger root, thinly sliced
  6. 1 lemon, zested

Instructions

  1. Bring water, white sugar, hibiscus, brown sugar, ginger, and lemon zest to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer until sugars dissolve and flowers soften, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and steep syrup until flavors combine, about 5 minutes.
  2. Strain syrup into a container through a fine-mesh strainer, pressing solids with a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard solids.
  3. Store syrup in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

This is a standard in our home bar, and my husband makes a variety of cocktails with it (Bees Knees is a family/friend favorite). I substitute honey for the sugar but otherwise follow the recipe as is.
