When he was a part of a gourmet culinary group, my brother offered me this recipe. It is straightforward but tasty, particularly when the steak is prepared using mesquite briquettes.

Yield: 2 cups

Ingredients

  1. 1 ½ cups water
  2. 1 cup white sugar
  3. ¼ cup coarsely chopped unpeeled fresh ginger
  4. 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  5. ½ teaspoon whole black peppercorns

Instructions

  1. Mix together water, sugar, ginger, lemon juice, and peppercorns in a saucepan. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, stirring frequently, until sugar dissolves. Let cool, 15 to 30 minutes.
  2. Strain syrup through a fine-mesh sieve; discard solids. Chill, covered, for up to 2 weeks.

Very nice flavor. Could be used for so many things – cocktails, added to champagne or sparkling water, drizzled over cake or fruit. I might add a bit more black pepper next time, as the flavor wasn’t really coming through for me.
