Ingredients
- Unsalted butter, for greasing the pan
- 3/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup apple cider
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 pounds Granny Smith apples
- 2 pounds Honeycrisp apples
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (see Cook’s Note)
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 2/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup pecans, coarsely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 sticks (1 cup) cold unsalted butter, cubed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
- For the filling: Whisk together the brown sugar, flour, apple cider, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a large bowl. Peel and core the apples and cut into chunks. Add the apples to the brown sugar mixture and toss to combine.
- Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish in an even layer.
- For the topping: Combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, pecans, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl. Add the butter cubes and use your fingers to completely work the butter into the flour mixture. The mixture should hold its shape when squeezed.
- Sprinkle the crumble topping over the filling, squeezing some of the mixture into small clumps. Bake until the filling is bubbly, the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown, about 1 hour.
- Let sit for at least 45 minutes and serve slightly warm or at room temperature.

Used this recipe for a get together when another I tried was a disaster. It was late and I did not have any apple cider and no time to go buy some, so I just omitted it and it was fine without. My apples were juicy enough that it just was not needed. Otherwise I followed the recipe exactly and it was delicious. Every bite was eaten by the guests.
I’ve used this recipes a few times since I found it last year and every time it’s a hit. And people usually end up asking for the recipe. I don’t understand why this has 4.3 stars.
Note: I omit the pecans as a personal preference and it still comes out amazing.

Fantastic!
Quite good. But who can find Apple Cider in June in Tucson, Arizona?! And the cost to get just a 1/4 cup apple juice was ridiculous. So instead I juiced one of the apples. Did the trick, but after tasting I got thinking. 1/4 cup of Bourbon. That would take this great recipe to spectacular! Will report back.
Was way too sweet…I would try it again but will reduce the amount of sugar

I wish recipes would list ingredients by how many cups of chopped frit to use instead of how many pounds. I guess I will do an estimate. I don’t have a kitchen scale for this
I made this recipe this morning. I read the reviews, and saw that one baker reduced 1/2 c. apple cider down to the 1/4 c. called for, so I did that too. I’ve never made an apple crisp with a sauce, but everyone really liked it. I’ve made apple crisp for years, where you just dump the apples in the bottom of the dish, then sprinkle the crumble on top. This recipe gave the apple crisp more flavor. My husband and daughter both commented that the sauce almost tasted like caramel sauce. This will be my go-to Apple Crisp recipe from now on!
I thought this was excellent! The only thing I did differently was to start with 1/2 cup apple cider and boil it down to 1/4 cup. It made more of a intense flavor. I brought it to a group potluck and everyone raved about it.
Best apple crisp recipe ever!! The topping needs a little more salt than the recipe calls for. I used only Honeycrisp apples and they were perfect for the dish.
