Ingredients

  1. ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  2. 3 slices bacon, cut into thirds
  3. 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  4. 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
  5. 1 head cabbage, cored and sliced
  6. 1 white onion, chopped
  7. 1 pinch white sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat; add bacon and season with salt and pepper. Cook until bacon is crisp, 5 to 7 minutes.
  2. Add cabbage, onion, and sugar; cook and stir continuously until cabbage and onion are tender, about 5 to 10 minutes.

I made this with no changes. It was very good, though I think next time I will use less oil. 1/3 cup was not necessary in my opinion. I’m from the north and the only way we’ve eaten cabbage was boiled with our corned beef. Now that we live down south, I’m cooking more and more southern food. On to the black eye peas that I always thought were peas….

My granny made this for years with a twist: ad d ed green pepper minus sugar the pepper adds its own sweetness, also add crushed garlic, and I use half a green cabbage and half a purple for color and taste. Then throw in some mushrooms and it’s awesome as a side or even a main dish!! I also use more center cut thick sliced bacon chopped to add more meat! Can’t go wrong!! Well worth the minimum a l effort!!

I loved this recipe when I saw but I did tweak it it a bit. I used smoked ham hocks instead of bacon. And I also used a stick of butter instead of the cooking oil. And added a tbsp of sugar instead of a pinch. It came out beautifully.
