This sauce is hearty and substantial since it uses fresh mushrooms. It is simple if your preferred canned sauce is used. The resulting sauce has an authentic flavor. Make use of a big saucepan or Dutch oven. If desired, sprinkle sauce with freshly grated Parmesan cheese before serving.

Ingredients
- 4 eggs, separated
- 1 cup white sugar
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ cup butter
- 6 baking apples – cored, peeled and sliced
Instructions
- Place egg whites into a mixing bowl with sugar, and beat with an electric mixer until the mixture forms soft peaks. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla.
- Whisk together the flour with baking powder in a separate bowl, and mix the flour mixture into the beaten egg mixture until just combined.
- Place butter and apples into the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking pan, and place into oven. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) to melt the butter. When oven is hot and butter has melted, stir the apples and butter together, and spread out in the pan. Pour the cake batter on top of the butter and apples.
- Bake in preheated oven until the top is golden brown, about 20 minutes. Loosen the edges of the cake with a spatula, and flip the cake over onto a serving platter to serve. Allow to cool for a few minutes before eating, or serve cool.

Reviews
I followed the recipe exactly but found I had to bake it longer than 20 minutes to have it cooked through. My husband and I LOVED this simple cake and we couldn’t stop eating it! We finished it off for breakfast with coffee. Perfect! Next time I will try to cut down on the amount of butter to see if it turns out well with less fat.
Awesome!
I prepared this recipe and unfortunately after 20 min. it was not done so when I went to flip it over, it fell apart. It still tasted good but I was unable to bring it to my ladies night.
Great recipe. Easy and always works. I love it with apples and plums and cinnamon!
My son made this recipe. We sprinkled cinnamon and sugar on it. It would be more delicious with cinnamon, sugar and pecans sprinkled across the cake before going into the oven.
my family rated this a keeper!
easy to prepare and looks pretty – until I dumped it out after 20 min….it was not completely cooked. My fault for not sticking a toothpick in it. Now it’s ugly but hopefully will taste ok
I thought this was very good. Easy to make, simple ingredients, and very tasty.
