This spicy bacon dressing was created by my great-grandmother. This can be put on top of greens like dandelion, cabbage, or cucumbers.

Ingredients
- 8 slices bacon
- 1 ½ cups white sugar
- 3 teaspoons cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup white vinegar
- ¼ cup water
Instructions
- Place bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain bacon slices on paper towels, then crumble and set aside.
- Whisk sugar, cornstarch, and salt together in a medium bowl. Slowly pour in vinegar and water, whisking constantly.
- Place crumbled bacon in a medium skillet over medium heat. Pour in vinegar mixture; cook and stir until mixture thickens.

I have made this several times and it turns out perfect every time! I just make half for the 2 of us and I usually use less bacon. Thanks for reminding me of an old favorite!
I believe this recipe is incorrect on the sugar measurement. Maybe it should be tablespoons not cups. 1 1/2 cups is just way too much. We have had this type of dressing in my family for years and I love it. I looked up the recipe because I couldn’t remember how much water to add.
I cut the sugar to 1 cup otherwise it sounded too sweet for me. It was very good on the “mystery” greens my husband brought home.
Just like my Gram’s. I served this over green leaf lettuce, just liker her. Brought back some great memories. Thank you.

I tried other recipes that were just “meh”. THIS is what I was looking for. The only additions were bacon drippings with saute’d minced red onion.
I made as written, will use a little less sugar next time……awesome flavor . Will use this recipe from now on.

I made this twice. The first time I made this, I made it as written and that’s what I’m rating a 3 out of 5 stars. I thought it was too sweet. The second time I reduced the sugar to one cup and substituted red wine vinegar for the white vinegar. That gave the dressing a nice rosy color. I cooked it longer the second time to reduce the mixture a little more. We are crazy about dressing with the changes I made
I cut the sugar also because for us that would have been way too sweet. Hubby told me to make sure I keep this recipe! Thank you for sharing,

This recipe is absolutely horrible. It isn’t even edible! I love bacon dressing, but this isn’t it. For starters, there’s WAY too much sugar.
I made this as written and It’s way too sweet. I’m going to add some water and apple cider vinegar to try to make it usable But can’t use it this way!
I changed sugar to 3/4 cup and added 1 T Brown Sugar for color and flavor. Cooked bacon in microwave to crispy to save time.
Super yummy. I did decide to add a little ground pepper after I made it following the instructions and tasted it. It’s great both ways!
Took a long time to thicken – use less water? Also, no remaining hint of vinegar once it cooked down – add the vinegar after it begins to thicken?
Love, love, love HBDressing! I’m from PA and we also use this as a “gravy” over cut/steamed or mashed potatoes. Hubby loves it. PS: When used as gravy, I add chopped endive at the end until wilted before serving. (Hubby’s Mom used lettuce instead of endive, but I find lettuce makes it too sweet.)
Very simple and everyone loved it. I served it on mixed greens once and on spinach the next time. I will confess that I didn’t drain the bacon…I poured the vinegar, sugar and water in the pan I cooked the bacon in. I reduced the recipe for just 2 people so there wasn’t that much bacon grease.
