Oven-Baked Onion Rings

  4.1 – 47 reviews  • Onion

In my perspective, asparagus doesn’t require any assistance, although a little prosciutto and lemon juice are lovely finishing touches.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 30 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  1. cooking spray
  2. 2 large egg whites
  3. 2 tablespoons milk
  4. 1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
  5. 3 cups panko bread crumbs, or more if needed
  6. ½ cup all-purpose flour
  7. salt and ground black pepper to taste
  8. 1 large yellow onion – ends trimmed off, peeled, and cut crosswise into 1/2-inch slices

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Spray a large rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray.
  2. Whisk egg whites, milk, and cayenne pepper together in a bowl until thoroughly combined. Place panko into a separate bowl.
  3. Toss a few onion slices in milk mixture with tongs until coated. Lift up so excess liquid drips back into the bowl, then place into panko and shake the bowl until rings are coated. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet and repeat with remaining onions. Spray coated onions lightly with cooking spray.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until onions are tender and crumbs are light golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes.

This recipe is amazing but THERE IS AN IMPORTANT STEP LEFT OUT IN THE DIRECTIONS!!!! Watch the video, before dredging in the egg/milk mixture you need to put flour salt and pepper into a ziplock bag and shake them up! Then the egg mixture, then the panko. I had this recipe forever, and went to print it again because mine was well used and loved, and this very important step is now left out! If allrecipes would update the directions, this recipe would get great reviews!

I much prefer using Italian Bread Crumbs in place of the Panko. Using the bread crumbs it seemed to stick better to the onions than the Panko crumbs did. Also found that it’s best to soak the sliced onions in water for a bit before dipping in mixture. Other than that; It is a great recipe

Biggest test, my husband loved it. Served with a frittata, the onions in a big bowl set between us on the breakfast table. Followed instructions except I had big white, not big yellow onion. One 4″ onion served 2 . Baked for 12 min, will try 15 next time.

Followed directions closely but these did not work for me. If you love onion rings stick to the classic deep-fried. These will disappoint.

Made these for the first time tonight. I used the tip someone gave to dip the rings in cold water before putting them in the bag with the flour mixture which worked great. I also used two whole eggs instead of just egg whites. Since I was almost out of panko crumbs, I used one cup of panko and one cup of Italian crumbs. This was enough for two huge onions! I also added garlic salt and Red Robin seasoning after spraying with spray before baking. My entire family loved them. Using convection at 425 degrees for 14 minutes worked the best. These aren’t as good as the deep-fried ones we sometimes get at a restaurant, but they are healthier and cheaper!

This was a very good to make onion rings, baked, not fried, which kept the breading on them.

I usually like Chef John’s recipes, so I was surprised this one was so bad. The panko didn’t stick. The rings were bland (and I used really good onions and plenty of salt and pepper). Perhaps if you use some of the reviewers’ fixes it’s better, but I will not make these again as written.

I put the egg mix, flour, and panko in three separate zip lock bags it was way less mess than dipping in a bowl. They were very tasty.

Easy. I took the advice to spake the raw onion in cold water prior to dipping in flour, etc. couldn’t taste the cayenne pepper. They were good and I can see where you could modify the recipe to step it up a notch. I cooked 450 for 20 minutes and then a quick broil.

Turned out great! Olive oil mister is essential to this recipe/

They need more flavour and maybe not so long in the oven But definitely better for you than deep fried

Not enough seasoning and it was too dry. Ugh

Wow you would not believe the crunch these had!

I used saltine crackers in place of breadcrumbs because I did not have any and it turned out really amazing. I can’t wait to see how it turns out with actual bread crumbs. Really easy to make and fun. Melt-in-your-mouth awesome

Very tasty. Forgot to spray with oil but they still turned out wonderful.

I liked the results, but disagreed with the amount of ingredients. I used regular bread crumbs, not panko, but three cups? I used two cups and used less than half. Same with the flour. Still, not as good as fried (what is?), but a good recipe if you adjust it.

This is delicious! Great alternative to a fried onion ring. I used a whole egg rather than egg whites. And I used almond milk rather than regular milk. Recipe still came out great 🙂

Pre-soaked the onions, added Italian seasoning to the panko, and loved every bite! My only problem this time was that my pepper adhered to only the onions it touched and didn’t redistribute during the shaking. I’d recommend pre-mixing the salt and pepper with the flour or nixing this step all-together and applying salt and pepper to the finished onion rings to each person’s taste. I’ll never buy pre-made onion rings again!

not bad very crispy have to play with the seasoning some to get a taste you like

These are absolutely delicious! All I did differently was season the flour a bit and spray with Pam before baking them. They were crispy, golden and so, so good.

I am diabetic with chronic kidney disease so I used my own rice milk yogurt, no salt, cayenne, pepper and cereal/bread crumbs They turned out AWESOME, no greasy taste. I will try freezing them
