I received this recipe from Megan R. It is a family recipe, she claimed. This was a side dish at Christmas or Easter meal!

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 50 mins
Additional Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 20 mins
Servings: 10
Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients

  1. 2 ¼ cups whole milk
  2. 2 ¼ cups water
  3. 1 teaspoon salt
  4. 1 cup quick-cooking grits
  5. 1 (8 ounce) package processed cheese (such as Velveeta®), cubed
  6. ½ pound sharp Cheddar cheese, cubed
  7. ¼ cup butter
  8. ⅛ teaspoon garlic powder
  9. 2 eggs, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 9×12-inch baking dish.
  2. Bring milk, water, and salt to a boil in a large saucepan; gradually sprinkle grits into the boiling liquid, stirring to combine. Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir processed cheese, sharp Cheddar cheese, butter, and garlic powder into grits, stirring until cheese has melted. Let the mixture stand until cooled, about 15 minutes. Stir beaten eggs into grits; transfer to prepared baking dish.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until the top is lightly golden brown and the grits are set, about 45 minutes.
  5. Any leftovers can be frozen and reheated.

Mom would make this all the time for Christmas Eve. Only addition she would add is a small can of mild green chilis, undrained. Which makes this a Texas Cheese Grits casserole. I now make it for Christmas Eve dinner.

This was amazing.! I did make some adjustments. I used 1/2 and 1/2 and 1% milk plus the water. I did an 8oz package of shredded cheddar cheese. This was a side dish to accompany pork ribs. I had green beans as a vegetable. I will DEFINITELY be making it again.

Liked it. Too lazy to hunt for the family recipe. I made this for a community BBQ. I made a 1.5 times the recipe. The app would not allow me to adjust. I used spicy cheese dip instead of velveeta. I live in California, not originally from here and I think velveeta is outlawed here. It was well received but I was disappointed that it didn’t hold its form and plated more like mashed potatoes. I’ll have to look for my family recipe. Not sharing that but you’ll be ok with this. Maybe add additional egg or eggs .

It’s a wonderful recipe. I tried it with a little sugar, it tasted great

Made this last night, and my husband and I both really enjoyed it. I had reduced the recipe from 10 servings down to 5, using the serving adjuster on the recipe page, and all was great. I came in to print the recipe for future use, but the serving adjuster isn’t behaving properly. Last night, the milk and water amounts were like 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon. Today, it’s showing 2 Tablespoons, a teaspoon, and a half a teaspoon, each, for the milk and the water. Something seems amiss here.

Delicious! I used all sharp cheddar and 1% milk, and it was very rich and savory.

My sister and I made this Christmas morning and it turned out amazing! Instead of using the processed cheese that the recipe called for we substituted 8oz shredded Tillamook sharp cheddar and Boars Head Gryuere. C’est Bon ! We also used 3cloves minced garlic snd no garlic powder.

This was so delicious. Added some pepper jack cheese for a little kick. Everyone loved it!

Substituted the velveeta for shredded Gouda and the cheddar cheese for shredded Swiss cheese. Added extra garlic

I love polenta or grits but the cheese didn’t work well with the recipe. I will try it without cheese and that should be good.

This is sooooo good! After a recent trip to the south and experiencing cheese grits for the first time, I had to make them. This recipe is perfect. I didn’t change anything. Yummy yummy yummy!

Besides scaling the recipe for 5 servings, I followed the recipe exactly. It was very rich and cheesy. It was not bland, as some have said, and I liked it a lot.

First off, it’s easy. But it’s a bit bland. I added a can of diced green chilis. And if you remember the video, they put hot sauce on the dish. It definitely needs some heat. I think I might use hot pork sausage. Not awful, but not fantastic, either.

Excellent recipe! I have made this dish several times and it is always a BIG hit. I have added 2 small cans of green chiles a couple of times when making this recipe and that too was a BIG hit!

Best grits recipe ever. I use a lb of velveeta cheese cubed.

Best grit casserole I have ever eaten. Made it with chicken broth instead of water.

I love it, but I added a lil change to mines. I added fried bacon & the grease from it. I poured the grease into the water & milk. Along with some slap your mama season salt, pepper, & garlic. I cut the bacon up in small pieces and added it before the eggs. It was GREAT!!! I will be making this again ??????

I didnt have “processed cheese food” so i only used shredded cheddar and jack. It was Beautiful!! I took it to an early morning meeting and all I got back was a practically licked clean dish. It was perfect

I’ve tried several Cheese Grit recipes since I’ve lost the one that my brother-in-law’s grandma used and we all loved . . . . this is the closest I’ve found and I’ve made this several times. Since it is just me, I cut the recipe in 1/2 and sometimes it will last a couple of days for breakfast. And sometimes I’ve eaten it for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Thanks for the Elaine!
