Ingredients

  1. 1/2 cup lentils
  2. 1 tablespoon olive oil
  3. 1 yellow onion, diced (about 2 cups)
  4. 1 green bell pepper, diced (about 2 cups)
  5. 3 garlic cloves, minced
  6. 1 (4-ounce) can chopped green chilies
  7. 1 tablespoon chili powder
  8. 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  9. 1/2 cup water
  10. 1/2 cup organic ketchup
  11. 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
  12. 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  13. 1 tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
  14. 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  15. 1/2 teaspoon celery seed
  16. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  17. 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  18. 8 hamburger buns, for serving
  19. Sliced avocado, for serving
  20. Pickles, for serving

Instructions

  1. Place lentils in a medium saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until tender, about 30 minutes. Drain.
  2. Preheat the broiler.
  3. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper and saute until onions are translucent and pepper is tender, about 7 to 8 minutes. Add garlic and cook about 1 more minute. Stir in chilies and chili powder, and cook about 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the lentils, tomato sauce, water, ketchup, brown sugar, Dijon, Worcestershire, vinegar, celery seed, salt and pepper. Mix well. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 15 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, broil the buns until toasted, 1 to 2 minutes.
  5. Serve the lentils on the toasted buns, topped with sliced avocado and with pickles on the side.

Absolutely loved this dish! Hubby loved it as well and it was his first time trying a vegetarian dish. I added a few black beans with my second sloppy joe for extra fiber and it tasted amazing as well. This dish is a must try, stomach will thank you.

Incredible. The texture and flavor is spot on.

Awesome recipe. I actually had some cooked burger so did half lentils and half ground beef. I did that mostly for my hubs but it was so yummy Incertainly would have been happy with all lentils like the original recipe. But love that even if I don’t use all lentils I still can stretch the ground beef with lentils. economical, budget friendly and very healthy. And most importantly super yummy!

I have made this recipe and actually gave it to my mom and she had no idea that there was no meat. When I finally told her she said it really tasted like a regular sloppy joe burger! DELICIOUS!!!

Super yummy! I didn’t have green chilies so I used jalapeño and it came out really good. I will definitely be making this again!
