Grandma’s Red Hot Southern Sweet Potatoes

4.2 – 6 reviews  • Sweet Potatoes With Marshmallow Recipes

Every year for the holidays, my grandma used to cook this straightforward sweet-spicy meal. You’ll want to make it all year long since it’s so good.

Prep Time: 45 mins
Cook Time: 45 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Servings: 8
Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  1. 3 ½ pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  2. ¼ cup butter or margarine, melted
  3. ½ cup packed brown sugar
  4. 1 ¼ cups cinnamon red hot candies
  5. ¾ cup water
  6. 1 (10 ounce) package miniature marshmallows (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Place the sweet potatoes into a large saucepan with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook over medium heat until tender, about 25 minutes. Drain water, and place potatoes in a large casserole dish.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  3. In a medium bowl, stir together the butter, brown sugar, red hot candies, and water. Pour over the sweet potatoes in the dish.
  4. Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven, until sweet potatoes are soft, and the candies are melted. After this, you may top with marshmallows, and return the dish to the oven for 10 minutes to toast them.

I don’t understand the point of boiling for 25 minutes before baking them for another hour “until the sweet potatoes are soft”. They’re already completely soft after 25 minutes of boiling… I already knew that boiling+baking was gonna make this dish way too mushy but I tried it anyway bc of the good reviews. I guess if you’re looking for cinnamon red hot mashed potatoes, it’s good, but I think candied yams/sweet potatoes should be fork tender, not mashed. Also, the candies did NOT melt all the way in the oven so I was left with a mess of mushy potatoes and chewy capsules that turned into a white color after all the red coloring seeped out, and they resembled maggots. Not exactly appetizing The flavor was good, next time I’ll just par broil the potatoes for 10 minutes and I’ll melt the candy mixture on the stove before adding it onto the potatoes.

This is just like what my mom and Granny made. We swapped half & half for the water. Very good and simple recipe.

I feel terrible that I’ve never reviewed this recipe. We’ve been making it for several years. It’s my family’s ALL TIME FAVORITE Thanksgiving dish! I make it exactly as the recipe states. I even add the optional marshmallows. We like them sweet! If you’re looking for a savory sweet potato dish, you need to look elsewhere.

This is clever, unique and delicious. I had a feeling this would be good but this was wow! I highly recommend giving this a try, esp. if you love cinnamon and sweet potatoes. It’s almost like a dessert. It was easy to make too.

I made this for my office Thanksgiving Day dinner. I was very nervous since no one had ever heard of using the cinnamon candies in the recipie. It was the hit. People went back for seconds and thirds. I had several people ask for the recipie. I’m making it again for our own dinner….
