Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups stone-ground whole-wheat flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup powdered or dry milk
- 1/2 cup quick-cooking oatmeal (not instant), plus extra for sprinkling
- 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons toasted wheat germ
- 1 extra-large egg, lightly beaten
- 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
- In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the two flours, the powdered milk, oatmeal, peanut butter and wheat germ. With the mixer on low speed, add the extra-large egg and 1 cup of water and mix just until it forms a slightly sticky ball.
- Dump the dough out on a well-floured board (I use all-purpose flour) and knead it into a ball. Roll the dough out 1/2-inch thick. Dip a cookie cutter in flour and cut out dog bone shapes. Collect the scraps, knead lightly, roll out again and cut more dog biscuits.
- Place the biscuits on the prepared sheet pan and brush with the egg wash. Sprinkle with oatmeal and bake for 1 hour, until completely hard. Cool and toss.

These were a huge hit with my dog! And I made 6 dozen for her doggie friends. I found a cute cutter on Amazon a little paw with a heart. So easy to make! Had to adjust the baking time for the small cutter, but they looked and smelled so good!
I make these all the time. I do not do the egg wash or the wheat germ, and use a pizza cutter to make squares as per nancy l.’s suggestion to use a pasta cutter. My dogs love them, and they make great gifts!
My go to recipe every month. My dogs Chloe and Lucy know the smell of the ingredients and get excited watching me make them. Very easy to make. For two years I made them in the shapes of dog bones and hearts. Time consuming! Now i just roll the dough out and use a pasta cutter to simply make square cookies. Whatever way shape or form you cut them—-They are great treats!!!!!!
So excited to make these as treats for all the family pets… so shocked that I didn’t see ANY recipes that added fruit other than banana… I’m adding dried blueberries to my batter too… haven’t met a dog that doesn’t like blueberries… using dried to avoid adding extra moisture..

These are fantastic. Our 3 dogs went crazy over these treats. They are sooo easy to make and smell just like peanut butter cookies as they baked. Since our dogs are small, I followed the recipe and used a small biscuit cutter to form them and baked them at 325 degrees for 50 minutes. They came out perfect. This is the first time I baked “cookies” for our dogs but it certainly won’t be the last.
Perfect treat for pups!! I make them in different sizes depending on their use. Training pups calls for little biscuits. My bigger guy needs a bigger biscuit.
This is the only treat my dog will eat. It’s so easy to make and you can change the size or shapes of the treat depending on your dog and cookie cutter. I bought a mini bone shaped cutter for my dog that is 14 lbs. Just adjust oven timing for size.
