White Sauce for Pasta

  4.4 – 90 reviews  • Creamy

This is how I’ve changed a typical Latvian dish. It was a typical Latvian dish served for breakfast or lunch. A little butter and honey were sprinkled on top. My children like to substitute maple syrup. Since it can be easily reheated for a fast snack, I usually always double the recipe.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
Total Time: 15 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  1. 2 tablespoons butter
  2. 2 tablespoons margarine
  3. 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  4. 1 cube chicken bouillon, crumbled
  5. 1 ½ cups boiling water
  6. 1 cup 2% milk
  7. ground white pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and margarine in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add flour and crumbled bouillon; stir until well blended, 1 to 2 minutes. Continue to cook and stir until thickened and lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
  2. Increase the heat to medium and whisk in water until smooth. Stir in milk; cook and stir until hot and thickened, 2 to 3 more minutes. Season with white pepper.

Okay white sauce. Next time I’ll add cheese and more herbs but this works as a good base.

I didn’t think it would make enough, my man likes lotsa sauce with his pasta, so I doubled the recipe, but this would have made plenty on it’s own. I added some garlic and herb flakes – it tastes great!

I thought it was nearly as good and much more healthy than an alfredo sauce. I added broccoli and asparagus and the next time, will add garlic and possibly onion. I did not have chicken bouillon so I omitted it.

We made this, as the menu called for… when we served it, we put some fresh ground black pepper on our servings. Delicious!!…. A great, quick recipe – what a treat!!

Perfect for quick & simple but also good. I added some garlic powder & extra bouillon powder. I’m still surprised the small & big picky eaters liked it, my 3yo loves it! This isn’t something to try to impress guests with but will definitely be a repeat on busy or lazy nights for my family. Thank you for sharing this!

I did not have margarine at home. Used butter just like another reviewer stated. I also used pasta water for the boiling water. The sauce came out really good. Used it with penne pasta and mixed vegetable.

Delicious! Made penne pasta with shrimp sautéed with garlic and sun-dried tomatoes. Yum! My guests loved it too. The only thing we had to add was a little salt.

I am giving this recipe 3 stars. Yes it was easy to make however, making it per the recipe given was a little bland. Its definitely good as a start to a white sauce but adding more flavor will give it taste.

After reading the reviews I decided to add some garlic and parmesan cheese and I still found this a tad bland. Not bad, but I like my white sauce a little more flavorful. Next time I will add additional garlic and maybe another bullion cube.

This is so yummy. I cooked a half a box of spiral pasta and 1.75lbs of diced chicken and mixed it with this sauce. I did sprinkle in some parmesan . I used skim milk, so I used a little more and less water I also used lots of garlic and onion powder. Yummy.
