Turkey-Lentil Chili

These traditional scalloped potatoes are succulent, creamy, and delectable. My mother used to prepare scalloped potatoes in this manner every time. The important step is to warm the milk first.

Prep Time: 35 mins
Cook Time: 35 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 10 mins
Servings: 12
Yield: 3 quarts

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups dry lentils
  2. 2 quarts vegetable broth
  3. 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  4. 4 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 1 large onion, chopped
  6. 2 stalks celery, chopped
  7. 1 pound turkey sausage
  8. 2 tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and chopped
  9. 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  10. 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  11. ½ teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  12. 1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes
  13. sea salt to taste
  14. 1 (8 ounce) container plain lowfat yogurt
  15. ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Bring lentils and vegetable broth to a boil in a large pot over high heat. Reduce heat to medium, and simmer for 10 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in the garlic, onion, celery, and sausage; cook and stir until the sausage is crumbly and no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, turmeric, cumin, thyme, and red pepper flakes; cook 5 minutes more.
  3. Stir the sausage mixture into the simmering lentils. Continue simmering until the lentils are tender, 20 to 30 minutes. Season to taste with salt. Garnish each serving with a dollop of yogurt and a sprinkle of chopped parsley to serve.

This was amazing . I changed a few things. But it was super good my family loved it! Here are the things I added in addition: Add 1 teaspoon tumeric Add 1 teaspoon of cumin Add 1.5 tablespoon of chili powder Add 1ish tablespoon salt Add 1 teaspoon pepper Left out: No celery No red pepper flakes Changed: 1 quart of low sodium chicken broth and 1 quart of water Lean ground turkey instead of sausage

Loved this! Used lower-fat pork sausage and did not add cumin because I don’t like it. If you don’t either, you won’t miss it! Really great soup.

This chili wasn’t pretty, but it tasted excellent! I used red lentils, chicken broth instead of vegetable, and a can of diced tomatoes instead fresh – all because that’s what I had on hand. I think it’s the combination of the seasonings that made it taste so good, though. I’m definitely saving this and will make it again, probably over and over.

This was very good but I did make some changes to make it more my taste. I subbed a cup of split peas because I only had one cup of lentils. I used ground turkey instead of sausage. I added a jalapeno and a bell pepper and a cup of diced sweet potato. Instead of fresh tomato, I used a can of Rotel and a can of tomato paste. Instead of turmeric, I used curry powder and I added a teaspoon of chili powder and a teaspoon of ancho powder. Turned out excellent.

Pretty good. I didn’t stay true to the recipe although I used all the ingredients except for substituting ground turkey for ground turkey sausage. Added half pkg chili powder. I just wanted to add that it came out very thick even though I kept adding liquid. It makes alot so I still need to add more liquid when I warm it up. Beef broth works well when warming. One cup of lentils would have been a sufficient amount for me. The yogurt at the end is good. Tastes like sour cream in chili, just a healthier version.

Great flavor! I used ground turkey and Pomi finely chopped tomatoes. Very filling, and delicious with a dollop of plain nonfat yogurt. I added the salt at the end, it did not need much.

Really delicious! Came out great, even with substitution of 2 cans diced tomatoes for fresh.

Great recipe! I used ground turkey instead of sausage, and added carrots, mushrooms, and chili powder. I also added another 14 oz of broth to thin it out a bit. Very hearty and well loved by everyone in the house.

Like some others said, this had more of a soup-like consistency rather than chili so when I make it again, I will only use 1 qt of broth and perhaps a bit of water, if needed. I used chicken broth instead of vegetable, ground turkey instead of turkey sausage, and canned diced tomatoes. I ran out of turmeric, so threw in some chili powder. I also added some rice to make up for the thin consistency. I will definitely try it with turkey sausage but I had to use what I had on hand.

Loved it, but made a few changes. I used 6 cups of water instead of 8 to get a stew vs soup consistency, I also doubled all the spices since I’m used to eating a lot of South Asian food and so this seemed pretty bland.

I used a little more turmeric and Cumin and it had a great taste similar to Indian food. If you enjoy Indian flavor food go for it.

I made this and we loved it. I will make it again during the winter. We found it gave us gas…just being honest here…but eating a little at a time is best, or put some beano on it. It’s hard to eat just a little, it really is tasty!

I didn’t have turkey sausage so I just used ground turkey. It was still good.

Just add the yogurt as you cook it, and use crushed red pepper to spice it up.

I followed the recipe as is, and my family loved it. I will definitely make this again.

I recently saw a cooking show where cooks were encouraged to seek and find “soon to expire” fresh and canned vegetables. So used 2 cans of diced tomatoes and a can of black beans [washed & drained]. We are not big sausage eaters, so I found a sausage recipe and extracted the spices [marjoram leaves, cloves, brown sugar]. Added some salt and pepper. Nice soup for a cold, wintry day. And pretty healthy, too.

This really is so flavorful. I used 2 lbs ground turkey, lean, 1/4 lb pork sausage, fire roasted tomatoes instead of fresh, added a can of yellow corn. Also really upped the garlic, cumin, turmeric. Kept other spices as called for. Truly so flavorful my boys forgot it wasn’t traditional chili. I must say a tad bit of sour cream on top puts THIS OVER THE TOP!

This was really good! My family loved it. I didn’t use the thyme and I added a little chili powder. I will definitely make this again.

Ok so I’m rating this even though I made some changes… but… I have to because it was amazing! I had a bunch of veggies to use up and threw them in; as well, I used deli chicken, cubed, instead of sausage. And I didn’t skin/seed my tomatoes. And I used half chicken stock, half veggie because that’s what I had at home. But really, the base is what I’m rating. I used a tablespoon each of the cumin and turmeric, having read other comments. Didn’t have thyme but was liberal with the salt and pepper. The flavours in this dish just burst! The dollop of plain yogurt (I used plain Greek yogurt) on top makes for a wonderful contrast to the broth which has just the right amount of kick to it (oh, I threw in a chopped banana pepper, seeds and all). Will make this again and again, thank you!
