Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine together flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.

- Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll into rounds. On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to flatten and stretch each round into a circle 7 inches across.

This is as close to our family recipe (lost), that I could find! A HUGE hit with everyone!! I will be making these many many times!!
This definitely doesn’t have enough water in the recipe. The first bath I made I used the 1/2 cup it called for. The dough was difficult to work with. Next batch I added 3/4 cup water. Perfect. It was easy to roll out thinly and made 6 large tortillas. The trick to rolling them out is to use plenty of flour on the board and rolling pin.
Thank you a million times! I have tried a ton of tortilla recipes and was just not able to make anything similar to what you can get in the store. These turned out perfect the first time! I then combined a couple of the dough balls to make a larger one and it was excellent! Genius! Please, please, please! Put this recipe on YouTube! It is the best. Also, take off the “II” from the end of the recipe title as it makes it very hard to find.
Going to try this. Love the flavor of tortillas.
These worked really well and the family loved them – my tortillas were rustic style and after taste testing them with shop bought were easily the winner . I used margarine instead of shortening and didn’t have baking powder in the cupboard – apart from that was easy and tasty.
Really loved the finished product! Tortillas tasted much better than store bought. The only adjustment I made was using 1tbsp of lard instead of shortening. I used a pastry knife to blend which worked beautifully but my crumbs were not very course…seemed quite fine. And letting it sit for an hour was necessary. Dough was perfect and easy to work. Will share this recipe and definitely make again. TIP: someone suggested putting warm tortillas in a plastic bag to retain moisture…was brilliant. Even leftover tortillas were perfectly pliable.
I enjoyed them better than the store bought.
Simple recipe. Turned out great. next time I would add more fat, and use lard instead of shortening.
Was thinking it was going to turn out to be a mess and no good but it was the exact opposite!! Amazing!! I increased the amount of crus I butter shortening by a tablespoon. So soft and warm!
This recipe works, with a little tweaking and knowledge. Like other reviewers, I had to increase the water by another 1/4-1/3 cup, and the lard by double. Once I figured out what the consistency of the dough was supposed to be, it was pretty easy, and definitely fast! Yes, rolling them out can be a little challenging, but just let the dough rest and it will work! Very tasty tortillas!!!
I loved it. I had tried it before but they weren’t quite as soft, so I added butter.
My first time ever making tortillas by hand and I was not disappointed. The tortillas have a great flavour and texture, 10/10 will make again.
These are really good and very easy. I kneaded the dough for a few minutes. The 15 minute rest is important. Do it. Try these and you want want store-bought ever again.
Simple and quick recipe for amazingly pliable tortillas! I split the flour 50/50 with whole wheat and they turned out great! Super good by themselves with butter!
I made a double batch to make bigger tortillas. A double batch will give you 10” tortillas. I also had to substitute unsalted butter for the shortening, but it worked well. This was a very simple and great recipe.
Does this make 6, or 12? It says it yields 6, but instructions say to divide it into 12 pieces.
Amazing & easy to follow for my impromptu DIY Taco Tuesday!
Turned out great! Kids love it!
Very easy to make!
There isn’t enough shortening to make soft tortillas. I made this recipe & the tortillas were hard.
Easy to follow recipe. I didn’t have shortening so I used butter. It’s good too! 🙂
