The Perfect Prime Rib Roast

  4.6 – 13 reviews

This is a genuine example of a 19th-century English holiday beverage. Use just fresh nutmeg; it’s best. It is really delicious, rich, and oh so addictive. Make it and eat it while you decorate the tree!

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 4 hrs 15 mins
Total Time: 4 hrs 25 mins
Servings: 6
Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  2. 1 teaspoon onion powder
  3. 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
  4. 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  5. 1 teaspoon salt (Optional)
  6. 3 pounds prime rib roast, ribs removed and trussed onto roast, or more to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Place a rack inside a roasting pan.
  2. Mix garlic powder, onion powder, dill weed, pepper, and salt together in a bowl; rub onto roast, including the ribs. Place roast, rib-side down, onto rack in roasting pan.

Turn oven back to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and cook roast until an internal temperature of 145 degrees F (65 degrees C) is reached, 30 minutes more.

I did not like the herbs on the exterior. Dill did not belong. Ended up cutting it off. I got almost no drippings. Was slightly overcooked despite using meat thermometer that did not require opening the door and shortening last cook time from 30 minutes to 20 minutes. Had 4.1 pound roast. Will not cook this way again.

I made it at Christmas for my family of 13 people. I extended the cooking time and the sitting time in the oven because I had a 10 lb roast. I found the cooking times per pound for this slow roasting method on the Internet. it was delicious and I’ll never cook my prime rib any other way! I highly recommended it.

The prime rib was done sooner than expected. I got it out of the oven early. Also the 500 degree sear temp was too high! Smoke came out of the oven. With that being said, my adult daughter said it melted in her mouth and was the best she ever had! Not sure how I will approach it the next time. I cooked. 6lb Prime rib roast from Costco.

I made this according to the recipe, with a 7 pound bone in prime rib roast. It turned out absolutely perfectly med rare, just the way I like it! Excellent recipe! And so easy a beginner can do this.

I much prefer thyme instead of dill, rosemary is good too, otherwise, this is the seasonings I’ve used for over 25 yrs.

I had a 4 lb prime rib roast so I adjusted the roasting time. I brought the roast to room temp and then roasted it for 1 hour @ 400°. I turned the oven off and halfway through the process I turned the oven on the 10 minutes. When the 3 hours were up the roast was done to perfection.

I love this recipe! It allows me to go have brunch with my family and come back and finish roasting. Because I prefer my roast just past pink I roast about a half hour more at first.

I liked this recipe up until it got the second cooking. After the three hours, it was tender and juicy. It had created its own sauce. Albeit, the roast was still very soft and not completely cooked, it looked appetizing. After the second time, the roast crisped up on the outside but almost all the juice evaporated. The flavor is very good, though. Thank you for the recipe.
