It’s a wonderful summertime soak. Its tasty, light taste goes well with seafood, fresh bread, chips, and even Mediterranean food.

Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups white sugar
- 1 cup soy sauce
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons ground ginger
- 3 cloves garlic, diced
- ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 ½ pounds chicken drumettes
Instructions
- Combine sugar, soy sauce, and water in an 8-quart pot; stir until sugar is dissolved. Turn heat to medium-high; add ginger, garlic, cinnamon, and black pepper and stir.
- Bring mixture to a boil and add chicken drumettes. Once mixture begins to boil again, reduce heat to medium-low, and partially cover pot with a lid tilted to allow steam to escape. Simmer until chicken is no longer pink in the center and teriyaki sauce is thickened, at least 1 hour.
- The drumettes do not need to be thawed first, cooking time will increase by about 15 minutes if frozen.
- Keep an eye on the temperature for the first 10 minutes of cooking the chicken. It may need to be adjusted – otherwise pot will boil over.

this is very tasty. my son is picky when it comes to chicken and he gave it a thumbs up. no changes made this time , I will add crushed red pepper flakes next time just to give this a little punch of heat.
Delicious! I did make several substitutions but this is the kind of base recipe you can tweak and use for various dishes. Some reviewers reduced the sugar but for me, I felt like it needed every bit of the sugar. I did, however, use 1/2 white, 1/2 dark brown sugar. I liked the idea of adding heat so I added 1T Sweet Chili Sauce. I also added some freshly grated ginger along with the ground ginger and used pineapple juice instead of water. I loved this dish. I used chicken legs and I cut up the leftovers and saved them in the sauce for noodle bowls the next day. They were fabulous. The sauce would also be great as a salad dressing if you added a little rice wine vinegar. It would also make a great marinade. This recipe is awesome and I will be making it in some form on a regular basis. The possibilities are endless!
I made this today. I took the advice of others and only used 1 cup of sugar, half white and half brown. I decreased the water to 3/4 cup and I used it as a marinade on my chicken tenderloins. I grilled them after about 2 hours in the sauce. Fantastic! This recipe is a keeper!
I love this meal. Some minor adjustments I’ve made are using a half cup white and half cup brown sugar, plus adding some crushed red peppers to the mix for a little heat. So delicious!
This was aMazingly good. My Only complaint is Waaaaay to much ginger Or cinnamon, I’m not sure which. HowEver, I may have over seasoned it myself. I didn’t have Ground ginger, I had ginger powder. I’m not sure if there’s a difference n them or not, but next time, (& a there will Definitely b a next time, lol) I’m gonna cut back on the ginger first & if that don’t do it, I’ll cut the cinnamon down. I did do 1/4 of brown sugar as others suggested. FanTastic recipe. Thank u Soo much for sharing this. Oh, also, I wanna try it grilled. Beating it over & over with the sauce. Bet it’ll b even Better. Also, coming if for so long n the pot helped the juices seep into the middle & u get that flavor All the way thru, tasting it Every bite. (This is the longest review I’ve Ever left in here. It’s That good. Enjoy
Easy to make and it tastes sooo good. I impressed my father in law so much he’s still talking about it the day after. My only comment is it’s high in sugar so I’m going to try splenda next time.
I have given this a 3 star as the recipe is written- but I added about a tablespoon give or take and it made this dish fabulous! Didnt think boiling drumettes would turn out but it was seriously great. Serve with Chinese Broccoli and a side of rice to complete the meal.
This was wonderful! I took the advice of others and cut back sugar to one cup and split half and half. I will not do that next time! Other than that change, we made exactly as written. It is a simple recipe and just delicious. Thank you for sharing. We will definitely make again. Cooking time was precise and the chicken came out tender. Excellent!
So this was okay. I like the cooking method, although I did have to babysit it and turn the drumsticks every so often. It had a bit more cinnamon than I prefer. I did cut the sugar to 1 cup, and did half white half brown. Overall good.
Fall off the bone great! I went with the suggestions and used just 1 cup of sugar (1/2 white & 1/2 brown) and added some red pepper flakes. Turned legs every 15 mins. I steamed some broccoli and threw it in the pot in the last 5 minutes and served over rice. Hubby loved it 🙂
I made this tonight to rave reviews. I took the advice of others on here and cut the sugar down and did half white, half brown sugar. It’s very delicious and the sauce is great drizzled over everything (white rice and broccoli were my sides). Of course it’s a high sugar high salt content food so I wouldn’t make it all the time and now I’m guzzling water. Easy to make also which is a plus.
Love this recipe!!!
This is a great recipe and so easy. I took other reviewers’ advice and cut sugar down to 1 cup, mixing it half brown sugar and half white sugar. Added some red pepper flakes. Other than that, exactly as written. I turned the drumsticks every 15 minutes because they were not fully covered. Definitely a keeper.
A hit with the whole family! So easy and delicious. I would have to agree that it is on the sweet side. I’ll be reducing the amount of sugar when I make it next time, much to my 5 year old’s dismay. She said it was amazing!
Very good, and very easy to make!
Will make again! Great starter recipe, I did cut back the sugar and swapped some white sugar for brown. I also added crushed red pepper to help cut the sweet. Thanks for the recipe!
We love this recipe! I would not change a thing! A+++
So easy to make and so delicious!! If I could give this recipe 10 stars I would!! The meat just falls off the bone!!
Followed directions as stated and the chicken was delicious. Had to keep turning chicken on its sides because the sauce did not cover them 100%. Everyone loved it!
I agree with Chef Mo. It’s very sweet. A little overwhelming on just rice. For anyone that is wondering, 1.5 pounds of drumettes is about 6 pieces. There is plenty of sauce left over. Next time I’m serving with steamed , stir fry type veggies.
I have never boiled chicken before. This recipe has changed that idea for me. The flavor was through out the entire chicken drumstick. They sauce was very sticky, but oh so yummy. I would maybe knock down the sugar some. I wouldn’t change anything else. Served with rice and had more sauce leftover for maybe some fried rice concept.
