We love hummus and because tahini is $15 a jar here, I frequently make it without it.

Looking for a recipe without Tahini–and I’ve now found it! Just a note–i read reviews and then went my own way. Made a 1/2 amount recipe as I am only one in household who likes hummus but I adore roasted red pepper hummus–another strong flavor to fill Tahini gap–used 1 Tblsp Olive oil for texture and smoothness–the 2 Tblsp pepper juice for more pepper flavor–all the spices but pepper and cumin not halved–2.5 Tblsp lemon juice–also added 1 Tblsp of the roasted red pepper–I like it a lot, and was first time making my own instead of buying–at 75 I am breaking into new fields (lol). Chilled til dinner time and ate with pita while rest of family ate some of my homemade chicken enchiladas. I am so glad I found your recipe.
Made it today, but make my own Tahini paste and used 1/4 C. I buy hulled sesame seeds from local stores here in OH. The 15oz last me a while. You can also find it online, like Amazon. Use 140 grams sesame seeds, toast in a dry pan over medium/med-low heat for 3 minutes, stir constantly till they start to get light golden. Remove and cool completely. Put in a food processor and blend about a minute, till crumbly paste forms. Add 3 TBSP of light oil (your choice) and process 2-3 minutes. Check consistency, If needed add another TBSP oil and process another minute. It makes 1/2 Cup Tahini paste. It’s a lot cheaper than 15.00, no chemicals added and better tasting.
not enough spice, i even added more, i think i need to revisit spices, ill try it one more time,
Hummus is one of my favorite snack foods. I had once tried another tahiniless hummus and didn’t like it at all, but this one was delicious! While tahini adds a unique flavor, I didn’t even miss it. The seasonings were spot on as written, but I did end up adding a bit more lemon juice, personal preference. So easy to make, and I always have a can of chickpeas in the pantry! I served it with a an extra drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of aleppo pepper.
