This is a solid recipe for a beginner in the kitchen. The directions are easy to follow and easy adjust for food allergies & preferences.
Excellent base recipe. My tweaks: Added 3 cloves garlic, 1 small habanero that I blended with the tomatoes, 2 stalks diced celery, 1 diced green pepper, 1 cup diced chicken breast. Subtracted: corn, 1/2 chili powder. This came out great. Good heat, Very filling.
I didn’t have all the ingredients but I did use the base recipe. The flavors with the chili powder and Cumin are amazing. I enjoy very spicy foods, so I added some ancho chile powder and some red pepper flakes. I also added red peppers, green beans, and corns because I wanted more vegetables. Overall a very good base and one that I’ll definitely make again. Thanks for sharing!
I agree with all the rest of the reviews the soup is delicious. The only difference I used a can of Southwestern corn.
Delicious. Sometimes I throw in an extra can of beans or some shredded chicken.
It turned out delicious! I used fire roasted tomatoes instead of stewed. I only side one can of black beans which I blended with the fire roasted tomatoes. Added celery and used three cups of water with four teaspoons of better than bullion chicken concentrate.
This was an easy soup. I was concerned about blending the black bean with the stewed tomatoes. My very picky 95 yr old mother in law loved it. I added green beans. Next time I’ll add celery as well. Fabulous!!!
This soup was ok. I’m not sure why it’s called “spicy” since it’s neither spicy hot or flavorful. I do like how simple it is to make. We doubled the spices, added some cayenne,
This soup came out REALLY GOOD. I made a few alterations. I added extra minced garlic. Instead of two cans of black beans, I used one can of black beans and puréed one can of pinto beans. I also took the liberty of adding some macaroni and I’m glad I did. I didn’t have cumin so I substituted that with taco seasoning, worked out well! Definitely would make this again!
Hubby and I loved this! Made as written but only used 2c broth after reading reviews. Topped with sour cream, cheddar cheese and chives. Served with biscuits. Perfect winter meal!
Preface: I rarely follow recipes but rather use them as a guideline. I was not looking for a vegetarian soup just a soup with black beans. I used chicken broth and added 93% lean ground turkey. I did add an extra cup of broth because of the meat and probably could have added another. Instead of stewed tomatoes I used rotel, 1 can blended with beans and 1 can poured directly in the pot. Even with the rotel, I didn’t find this to be very spicy so that was disappointing but I will just add hot sauce to each bowl. I’ll definitely use this again and add additional spices and/or some additional green chiles to the desired level of spicy! Overall it turned out pretty delicious!
Excellent soup and super easy!
Boring soup. Nothing special about the flavor or texture. Make this recipe a day ahead, add more corn (texture) and more spice (put a diced jalapeño in with the sauté and/or have your tabasco sauce nearby (flavor)!
I like the taste but had to add extra things to spice it up more.
Delicious and really easy to riff on depending on what you have in your pantry.
Fast and easy prep, and delicious. There was a two thumbs up with my family. I definitely will make this again and many times ahead.
Love this soup! It’s my go- to for the last year, and with it getting cooler again… yum! I add some cayenne pepper and fresh chilies to make it truly spicy. I add some chopped sweet peppers too. Delicious!
Ok, if you haven’t, you have to try this wonderful soup. The soup are so easy to make and you can alternate the ingredients if you want. I never before have any black bean soup, but this one is going to be among my favorites now. I put some tortilla chip on top and some sour cream and taste even better. Thank you for this great recipe!
It’s delicious. I make it a few times a month. I added some potatoes and increased the stock to 6 cups.
It was good enough that I would make it again, with changes. It lacked spicy flavor and body. I plan on doubling the beans and adding additional spices, possibly with some cayenne, too, next time. Topping it with shredded cheddar cheese when serving improved it.
This soup was super easy to make and really tasty. The only alteration I made was I used diced tomatoes with chillies to add a bit more spice, as my kids love spicy food. It was really spicy, at least for me as I am a huge wimp. Will make this again for sure.
