Ingredients

  1. 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  2. 1 medium red bell pepper, medium diced
  3. 1 medium onion, medium diced
  4. 1 1/2 pounds ground beef or ground meat substitute (soy crumbles)
  5. One 6-ounce can tomato paste
  6. 1/4 cup bourbon
  7. 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  8. 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  9. 2 tablespoons whole-grain mustard
  10. 2 tablespoons sorghum syrup
  11. 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  12. 2 teaspoons liquid smoke
  13. 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  14. 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  15. 12 slider buns
  16. Unsalted butter, for toasting buns

Instructions

  1. Heat the coconut oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the red peppers and onions and saute until just beginning to turn translucent, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Saute until browned all the way through, about 5 minutes. (If using ground meat substitute, just heat until warmed through, about 2 minutes.)
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the tomato paste, bourbon, soy sauce, cider vinegar, mustard, sorghum, cumin, liquid smoke, red pepper flakes and 1/2 cup water.
  3. Stir the bourbon mixture and the garlic into the skillet. Simmer, covered, for 15 to 20 minutes. Season with more soy sauce as needed.
  4. Toast the slider buns with a little butter in a cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the buns.

I was a little worried but I read the comments and added a few tablespoons of honey and that did the trick! Great blend of sweet, heat, smoke.

Loved it. Made a few substitutions based on ingredients on hand: used olive oil instead of coconut oil; maple syrup instead of the syrup noted in the recipe; and I used Jack Daniels instead of bourbon, which, from a cooking standpoint probably isn’t much of a substitution. It was delicious. I can’t imagine I’ll ever go back to canned sloppy joe mix.

I loved it, kids not so much. So I’m left eating all these leftovers. Would love some ideas for the leftovers!

I tested this recipe for a family reunion scheduled later this month. It’s a winner! Picky husband tested and approved, so I will be making a batch big enough to feed 75. I slightly reduced the amount of smoke and red pepper flakes. I could not find sorghum syrup so substituted honey. Hoping to find it for the big batch.

Wish you and your shows were on Food Network more often.

I’ve been looking for a good sloppy joe recipe. Decide to try it but, substituted with 1lb ground beef and 1/2 lb ground sausage. It was so good. My husband, who my only hint he likes it is if he gets seconds, could not stop complementing it. Even after dinner he mentioned it several times. Even told me his tastebuds exploded. Thank you so much for this. The butternut squash coleslaw was great too. ❤️

I saw this episode one morning and decided if it was good I would make it for our Memorial Day family get together. I just made it and it is AMAZING! For sure going to make it for the family get together and never using a different sloppy joe recipe again!

Loved this “Southern” attempt on a childhood favorite, Sloppy Joes. I’m tossing my old Sloppy Joe recipe out and adding this version to my recipe box. Making these into sliders is brilliant!! I love your show Darmaris and have been a fan since you stepped onto the FN stage!!

Tried this recipe yesterday, it was delicious!  I left out the Red pepper flakes and used honey instead of sorghum.  I love Demaris’ recipes and her show, she is so cute and funny!
