I’ve been cooking this sour cream and cranberry Jell-O salad for so long that I can never forget how to make it. a wonderful substitution for the traditional cranberry salad offered at Thanksgiving. Very simple and delicious as well.

  1. 1 (16 ounce) can jellied cranberry sauce
  2. 2 (3 ounce) packages black cherry-flavored gelatin mix (such as Jell-O)
  3. 1 ¾ cups boiling water
  4. 1 (16 ounce) carton sour cream

Instructions

  1. Mash jellied cranberry sauce in a 3-quart bowl. Stir in gelatin mix until thoroughly combined. Pour in boiling water; stir until gelatin has dissolved completely, about 3 minutes. Chill in the refrigerator until softly set, 2 to 3 hours.

I make with a couple of modifications using 1 3oz package of cherry jello and 1 3oz of raspberry jello. Add the zest of 1 orange to the jello and hot water (less if you want less obvious citrus notes). Use WHOLE BERRY cranberry sauce not jellied. It’s an amazing variation to traditional cranberry sauce without fruit except the cranberry pieces. It’s not Thanksgiving to our family without it❣️

I didn’t have jellied cranberry sauce so I used whole berry sauce plus I put in a can of very well drained crushed pineapple. The grandkids just devoured it!! It’s a winner for sure!

This was so easy and a huge hit. It is great as the recipe stands. At Thanksgiving everyone wanted seconds.

This is my moms recipe for the holidays. She passed away 4 years ago and I have been searching for this recipe. Thank yo for sharing . I’m making it for Christmas.

Ah, I should note that my family makes it slightly different. We pour half of the jello and cranberry mix in an 8×8 pan and let it set in the fridge for an hour or so. Then we carefully spread a layer of light sour cream on top ( fat free is too thin and the full fat has a weird texture for me) and carefully ladle the remaining mix over the top. Then set in the fridge. It’s amazing.

My mother made this every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This may seem strange to others during the holiday season… but, is the only way that my mother served cranberry sauce during the holiday season.

Did not like this. Made it exactly as written and it tasted just like fruit on the bottom yogurt. Definitely did not go well as a compliment or side dish for ham or turkey as I was hoping.

Had this at a potluck at work, and LOVED it. I started making it without the recipe, and had made the jello following the package directions. When I looked it up, saw that it was supposed to have less water, I went ahead and finished. The extra did not seem to be a problem. The only other difference was by adding walnuts. This is delicious, thank you for posting it!

I made this for a luncheon following a memorial service at church. Everyone loved it and it was so easy to make. I did add a small can of drained pineapple to it but it would be just as good without. It’s sweet and tart at the same time. It’s one I will continue to make!
