Ingredients
- 2 cups chopped apples
- ½ cup dried cranberries
- 1 cup steel-cut oats
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons butter, sliced
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, or more to taste
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups water
- ½ cup chopped walnuts
Instructions
- Line a 3 1/2- or 4-quart slow cooker with a disposable slow cooker liner. Place apples, cranberries, oats, brown sugar, butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg inside. Pour in milk and water and mix to combine. Cover.
- Cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours. Sprinkle cooked oatmeal with chopped walnuts.

Sweet, tart, nutty good
I used 1/4 C brown sugar and it was still plenty sweet. I cooked it on low for 8 hours and that was too long for my cooker.
I substituted Maple syrup for the brown sugar…1/2 cup. It really came out nice. It’s important not to forget to add a little salt with all of the other ingredients at the beginning. That salt really brings out the oat flavor and removes that blandness. Not a lot! Just a few shakes.
Family loved it! Made the following changes: 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, no butter, used almond milk. I thought 1/2 cup sugar sounded over the top so I started out with adding 1 tablespoon with the idea that I could always add more. It turns out that 1 tablespoon was perfect because the apples (honeycrisp) added sweetness as well. Also, because we got home late last night, I didn’t use a crockpot and instead cooked it on the stovetop this morning. Cooked covered for 30 minutes and then had to simmer uncovered for about 10 minutes to reach the thickness that we like. Delicious and healthy!

I added 1 tablespoon of flaxmeal to the recipe for added fiber.
Absolutely yummy, almost like eating desert. If you like sweet, follow the recipe exactly. I will do half the sugar and butter next time, and more water vs. milk to keep calorie count down. I also used almond milk. Cooking time reduced so it wasn’t too thick since I am using microwave to warm up (worked great).
Great oatmeal! Really like the cranberry/apple/spice flavor! I used maple syrup in place of brown sugar, and lessened the amount to about 1/4 cup. I don’t care for overly sweet anything, so this was perfect for me. I used apples that were somewhere between sweet and tart–and next time I would use all tart apples for a bit more punch of flavor. Also, I would add a pinch of salt and a bit of vanilla extract to help bring out the flavors just a bit more. The oatmeal only needed about 5-6 hours on low heat, and should be stirred every so often to prevent sticking. Overall though, I really enjoyed this recipe–it’s easy to make, tastes wonderful, and makes your house smell great while it’s cooking too!
