Slow Cooked Ham and Potato Chowder

  4.4 – 70 reviews  • Corn Chowder Recipes

To use up leftover ham from Christmas dinners, try this recipe. It is quite simple to prepare in your slow cooker and is warm and filling. I adore how the potatoes are precisely cooked while maintaining a wonderful, solid texture. With some hot crescent rolls or cheesy biscuits, this chowder is fantastic!

very good. great way to use up extra ham. Next time I will try using potato flakes or an immersion blender to thicken it up a bit.

Love it. Didn’t have celery seed so used celery stalk in the broth. Added a little heavy cream at the end. Wonderful

I have a family of seven and some of them are picky eaters. Everyone loved this so much that they fought over the left overs!!!

This was way too salty. Did not add the dill.

I have made this several times and each time was delicious, the whole family loves it! I love that it doesn’t matter if you change it up a little bit, its still delicious. we put in frozen mixed veggies before and this last time put in frozen bag of California melody, which has carrots broccoli and cauliflower and super awesome!

This was simple. I thought it would be a little thicker but it works for this time of year. What’s better, my Dad really liked it and went for thirds. Thumbs up on this one!

This soup was very good! I did celery soup in place of the chicken soup and did not put celery seed. I also added some carrots and left out the butter.

Good basic recipe. I sauteed the onion first and made a white sauce with the butter, flour, 3 cups water and 1 cup milk. I omitted the cream soup. I added 1/2 cup instant potatoes per suggestion and it turned out creamy and delicious. Family loved it.

My daughter made this with leftover Christmas ham and let me tell you…this is AMAZING soup! Our family loved it so much, we hope to make it every year post-Christmas…and any time of the year!

I’ve made 2x’s. 1st time as recipes calls for, second time according to my taste. Original recipe is way too salty with soup base, canned soup and ham. Also kind of thin for a chowder. I liked the volume of chowder the recipe made, so I used 3C low sodium chicken broth and a healthy version of the cream of chicken soup. I used 2C of ham instead. I followed directions other than changing those ingredients. When potatoes were done, I whisked in 1-2 cups cooked mashed potatoes(I used boxed) to thicken to a heavier consistency and give some more texture. I let the chowder cook down some after adding the potatoes. It came out great, smooth, creamy, filling. Topped with bacon crumbles and cheese. Very, very good, really simple and a great way to use up leftovers.

This is definitely one of the easiest recipes I ever made and takes about 5 minutes to prep. It is a perfect week night meal. If you are looking for quick, easy, and something warm this is the recipe for you! If you are trying out for America’s Next Top Chef and you are trying to increase your culinary repertoire then I would try your hand at something else.

Made quite a few changes. Used bacon rather than ham. Sauteed the onion in two strips of bacon for about 20 minutes. Added two chopped carrots and two chopped celery sticks. Used 5 potatoes. Only 1/2 cup of corn. 1/8 cup flour. About 3 drops of hot sauce. Cooked on high for 5.5 hours. The rest of the recipe was the same.

I made this with everything almost the same. I used cream o mushroom soup and hard boiled eggs at the end. Also fresh parsley

This was a tasty chowder, the changes that I made were, I used a large can 26 oz cream of chicken, I substituted the 1/2 cup of water with milk, I added fresh mushrooms, and about 4 oz of processed American cheese. I also added red pepper flakes cause I like spice. One thing I kept out was the dill, the first time my family thought it was way to dilly.
Justin Castillo
I forgot to add the dill weed, but it still tastes great! I might try adding more vegetables like carrots and peas next time.

This recipe is lacking flavor. Will not make again.

I added a 12 ounce bag of mixed vegetables and a 10.75 can of cheddar cheese soup, and I added 2 celery heart. I left the skins on the potatoes. It can out great! Thanks, Happy Cooking!

Great recipe! I did increase the ham to 2 cups. The only thing have would have made it better is if it was cold outside 🙂
Holly Brown
Followed this recipe exactly as written and thought it was very good. Put it in the crockpot the morning I was getting my wisdom teeth out and ate it for days! Will make again!
