Ingredients
- ½ pound ground beef
- ½ onion, chopped
- ½ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 hamburger buns, split
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and stir in ground beef and onion. Cook and stir until beef is crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Drain and discard any excess grease. Stir in ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, vinegar, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt.
- Bring beef mixture to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer until sauce has thickened, 30 to 40 minutes. Serve on buns.
- Don’t be afraid of the vinegar, as it counterbalances the sweetness of the sugar and the spiciness of the chili powder.

Easy to make. Tasty.
This is the best. I don’t buy the canned sauce anymore. I made as directed, but reduced to one serving for just myself. It still made enough for a leftover sandwich. Served on Texas Toast.
I pretty much followed this recipe to a T, however based on some of the reviews concerning sweetness. I reduced the doubled recipe to 2 teaspoons of brown sugar. Although I might carefully tweak this recipe, it was good enough to allow me to throw away the one I was brought up and using for years.
This is our go-to for Sloppy Joes. I’ve made it several times and didn’t change anything! Love it!!!
Easy, and brings back memories of childhood. I used grey poupon mustard instead of prepared mustard, and doubled the amount. We loved it!
This is my “go to” recipe for sloppy joe’s! I often double it!! So quick and easy! Delicious!!
Excellent recipe. I made it exactly as printed but doubled everything for 1 lb of hamburger. This is definitely a keeper and I wouldn’t change anything. Better than anything in the can.
I liked it with my fries
Made this today,. I substituted ground turkey breast added chopped red bell pepper and reduced the brown sugar to 2 tsps. Delicious will absolutely add to my go to list.
This is the best Sloppy Joe recipe ever! Made with no changes. Usually makes more than 2 servings for me.
Made just as is but wasn’t very good it was way too sweet.
It was great, my husband and I enjoyed it. I added bell pepper. It will be made again. I will share the recipe.
I love it
The only change I make is a pinch of clove.
I use a little less brown sugar, but they are amazing!
Kept drying out. Added more water. Taste great will make again.
We both enjoyed it. I did decrease the amount of sugar to two teaspoons (as some reviewers thought it was too sweet) and I added green pepper. Sweetness was perfect. Flavor was delicious. I will make this again.
I love sloppy Joe’s and I haven’t thought about them in a long time. Thanks for reminding me.
Flavour is excellent and recipe is easy to make but only 4 stars because as others have commented it is too sweet and I did half BBQ sauce and half ketchup. Next time I would likely put 1 tbsp. of ketchup and the rest BBQ sauce. Only other change I made was adding green peppers. I wonder has anyone tried making this without the 1 tbsp. of brown sugar?
There are numerous sloppy Joe recipes I’ve tried, they seem to all pretty much taste the same. This particular recipe I used 1 lb. of ground beef so I doubled the recipe. I used about a 3/4 cup of ketchup and a couple of dashes of cayenne pepper. These sloppy Joe’s were too sweet, so I added a little more vinegar. I added more water as needed as the mixture kept getting too dry. This recipe is ok, but I’ll continue to use the canned Red Gold Sloppy Joe Sauce (way better than Manwich).
We loved it
