Ingredients
- cooking spray
- 8 ounces shell macaroni
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 ¼ cups water
- 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
- 1 (1.3 ounce) envelope Sloppy Joe seasoning mix
- 1 (16 ounce) package cottage cheese
- ½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Coat a 2 /12-quart casserole with cooking spray.
- Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook shell macaroni in the boiling water, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, about 8 minutes.
- Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and discard grease. Add water, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and seasoning mix. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Drain and rinse macaroni. Spread 1/2 of the macaroni into the bottom of the prepared casserole dish. Top with cottage cheese, then the beef mixture. Repeat layers of macaroni, cottage cheese, and meat. Cover with Cheddar cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven until cheese is melted and casserole is bubbly, 35 to 40 minutes. Serve hot.
- This recipe is very basic, so you could easily add some extra ingredients like chopped onion, green pepper, and maybe even some mushrooms.

This did not go over well. It was pretty bland. maybe if you mixed everything instead of layering it. Also turns out we are not fans of sloppy Joe seasoning packets.
Nice twist on Sloppy Joes! I omitted the cottage cheese because we don’t like it. You can use any kind of pasta you have on hand! Will make again.
This was just ok for us — needed more seasoning. I did add onion, garlic, salt, & some red pepper, but it still needed something more, though I’m not sure what. We’ll finish what’s left over, but probably won’t make this again.
This was actually really good. I made the recipe exactly as described. It wasn’t watery for me at all. My fiance only asked that I add more cheddar cheese next time.
Marathon Runner Hubby & kids approved! I doubled the recipe, added 1/2 an onion, a bit of chopped garlic, & seasonings. Instead of tomato sauce, I used a can of mannwich sloppy joe sauce (my Hubs fav)! But, I wish I had more cottage cheese. It was still tasty! My kids have learned how to brown the meat & cook the pasta ahead of time, for a future Scouting campout meal!
Husband loved it!! Next time I make it, I’m going to double the cottage cheese – just my preference.
Easier using the canned Sloppy Joe with a little water to rinse out the can. This is a nice blank palette, going to amp it up a bit next time.
Made as directed. Family loved it. Will make again soon.
It’s like a combination of sloppy joes and baked mostaccioli . I prefer this to a sloppy joe on a bun, love the cottage cheese! Simple, delicious and a great comfort food!
I followed the recipe to the letter It turned out delicous
My husband and I loved it. He loved it so much he is taking it for lunch the next three days. I wouldn’t change a thing.
No changes
Excellent! Added onion. Otherwise made as written. Will make again.
I added mushrooms, we loved it! Thank you for sharing with us.
I changed out the sloppy Joe mix for taco mix and replaced the tomato sauce with enchilada sauce. Was yummy
Added green pepper, shallot chopped fresh mushrooms to the ground sirloin I had. Followed the recipe from there, used elbow mac. Drained the cottage cheese as suggested by another review. It needed a little more, but my boys like zippy and I seem to have caught it as well. I’ll certainly make it again due to ease, and add Italian or Mexican spices. My sloppy joe mix was generic.
Easy to make and super for everyone in the house!
Quick meal about an hour. Kids loved it. After reading other review and having made it. I agree with straining the cottage cheese. It was simple to make and yummy. Nice meal for colder spring day.
Substituted tomato sauce with Hunts thick and rich spaghetti sauce…. oooooo… yummy spicey!
I added panko crumbs to the cheese topping for extra texture and will make it again.
I didn’t have sloppy Joe Joe package so I used Ta o seasoning.
