Savory Portobello Mushroom Burgers

  4.8 – 52 reviews  • Veggie

This marinade of Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, and garlic dressing is drizzled on top of the portobello mushroom caps. This is a quick, simple, and healthy substitute for a standard beef burger. Many meat eaters I know adore them!

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
Additional Time: 10 mins
Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 4
Yield: 4 mushroom burgers

Ingredients

  1. 2 tablespoons olive oil
  2. 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  3. 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  4. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  5. ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (Optional)
  6. 1 pinch salt and ground black pepper
  7. 4 large portobello mushrooms, stems removed
  8. 4 kaiser rolls, split

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate.
  2. Whisk olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Brush mixture over tops and bottoms of mushrooms; let stand for 10 minutes.
  3. Grill mushrooms on the preheated grill with the cover closed until mushrooms are browned and tender, about 10 minutes, turning once. Serve on kaiser rolls.
  4. These mushroom caps can be topped with mayo, tomatoes, and shredded Cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese.
  5. I prefer to top them with roasted red peppers and goat cheese.

It’s my first time grilling portobello. I scraped out the gills and my husband didn’t. Mine was flatter and more like a burger. It was good. My husband’s was still big and hard to eat. It did not flatten out. He said his was good but messy. He will scrape out the gills next time. The marinade was very tasty.

I only pulled this up to see how long to cook on the grill, 8 minutes seemed to be long enough. I just drizzled my portobello with olive oil and worsteshire and I thought it was delish!

These were delicious! I did double the marinade and was glad I did because I had huge portabellos. In the future, I’ll adjust the amount depending on the mushroom size. Next time, I will also try to find a way to remove more liquid from the mushroom so it’s not so messy. Perhaps I’ll pull out my G. Foreman Grill and try that method.

This was so good! I added a little more Worcester for a more burger like taste. Served it with avocado, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato. Best thing ever!!

One of those rare times when something was so good I asked myself, “Did I really make that”? Easy. I made it without any changes.

I was disappointed in the outcome of this recipe. I followed the recipe exactly and found the flavor quite bland. I will not be making this again.

definitely would make again, I added dried Oregano and dried Basil leaves to the sauce.

I didn’t make any changes and added the optional Worcestershire sauce. I made 2, one for now and one for later but somehow, the second burger ended up in my mouth well ahead of schedule. I’m eating them now and had to stop to write this review. Thanks a bunch Kerri!!!

So easy and delicious! I wouldn’t change a thing! I couldn’t grill because it was pouring so I baked for 20 minutes at 400 as another reviewer suggested. They were so good! We didn’t even eat them with buns. My new favorite portobello dish!

I don’t cook portobello mushrooms often, but this recipe makes me want to change that! Marinated for those 10 minutes really brings an awesome flavor. I used my convectional oven on medium and cooked them about 8 minutes and they were perfect. Would give 5 stars, no questions asked. Changed nothing!

Hard to mess this up, didn’t have some of the ingredients and it still was great, just did in a skillet on the stove top.
Tammy Alexander
Broiled these in the oven and they were fantastic! Thanks for a simple but delicious recipe.

I made this recipe and LOVED it! I didn’t use the olive oil and didn’t miss it one bit.
