Yield: | 1 9×3-inch casserole |
Ingredients
- 1 (16 ounce) package Jimmy Dean® Premium Pork Regular Sausage
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup water
- 2 (2.75-ounce packages) sausage country gravy mix
- 1 (16 ounce) can refrigerated biscuit dough
- ½ cup dried cranberries
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Add sausage to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir with a spatula, breaking apart the sausage until cooked, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate and set aside.
- Whisk milk, water, and gravy mix together in the same saucepan. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until the gravy reaches a boil and thickens, about 8 minutes. Turn off heat and stir in the crumbled sausage.
- Tear biscuits into pieces. Spread 1/2 of the biscuit pieces in an even layer in the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Pour the sausage and gravy mixture over the biscuits. Place the remaining biscuit pieces evenly on top. Sprinkle the dried cranberries over the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the biscuits are golden, about 20 minutes.

Reviews
I made this for Christmas brunch and everyone loved it! I halved it because we had a lot of food coming and it was perfect. I read the reviews of people saying the bottom biscuits were doughy so I put the bottom layer of biscuits in the oven for about 8 minutes then took it out and added the gravy and the rest of the biscuit dough and cranberries and baked till the top biscuits were golden brown. Turned out wonderful!
There has to be a mistake in this recipe. When I added two packets of gravy mix with the milk and water, it quickly turned to a thick paste. If I were going to make this again, I would only use one packet of gravy mix and then it might take 8 minutes to thicken. Made as the recipe calls for, it was pasty and the gravy seasoning overtook the dish.
My family loved this bake – made it for Christmas brunch. I was told it has become a new tradition. The cranberries add a nice bit of sweetness.
I had to bake the casserole a bit longer, closer to 30 minutes and next time I’ll pick a gravy mix that not quite a peppery. All told, the recipe was wonderful. Even my grandbabies loved it. A holiday (and other days) staple from now on.
Good idea but I had to add additional milk and water when using 2 pkgs of gravy mix. Also the biscuits on the bottom do not cook all the way and come out doughy. Had to put back in oven and bake longer.
I really enjoyed this. Like another reviewer I also halved as it’s just my husband and I. I still baked for 20 minutes, and I used 6 out of 8 of the biscuits from the tube. I did find the bottom layer was still a little doughy. I used 50% less sugar dried cranberries and it was perfect. I don’t particularly love cooking and this was so easy even for me. Will definitely save for another time!
Very simple and tasty dish to put together.
I thought this was pretty good! I was a little skeptical about adding the cranberries, but they added some nice flavor and sweetness! Even my toddler enjoyed this recipe!
This was my first time making biscuits and gravy and it was so easy! I loved using store-bought biscuits to keep things really quick. I was skeptical of the cranberries at first but thought they added a nice sweet surprise! My gravy thickened up really fast so next time I might try turning the heat down or adding a little more milk to thin it out. The flavor from the sausage was DELICIOUS! Will make again!
What a fantastic recipe! The balance of flavors is sooo good!! The only adjustments I made was to halve the recipe (since it’s just hubby and me), added a pinch of red pepper flakes to the gravy, and made the entire thing in my cast iron. I absolutely love the combination of savory sausage, the sweet-tart cranberries, the creamy gravy, and the bit of heat from the red pepper–it’s unexpected, and delicious! Plus: it’s a gorgeous dish! Thanks so much for the recipe!
