Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 8 ounces hot or sweet Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1 clove garlic, grated
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
- 1 red onion, sliced 1/2 inch thick
- 2 bell peppers (1 red, 1 yellow), cut into 1/2-inch-wide strips
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing
- 4 slices provolone cheese
- 4 sesame potato hamburger buns, split
- 4 large basil leaves, torn
- Warmed marinara sauce, for topping
- Potato chips, for serving
Instructions
- Combine the ground beef, sausage, garlic, oregano, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper in a medium bowl; mix with your hands until just combined. Form into four 3/4-inch-thick patties; set aside.
- Preheat a grill pan or grill over medium heat. Toss the onion and bell peppers with the olive oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper in a bowl. Grill the vegetables, turning occasionally, until lightly browned and tender, about 7 minutes. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
- Brush the grill pan with olive oil. Add the burgers and cook until browned and cooked through, about 4 minutes per side, topping with the cheese and covering during the last 2 minutes.
- Serve the burgers on the buns and top with the onion-pepper mixture, basil and marinara sauce. Serve with chips.

Reviews
These came out great. I sautéed the onions and peppers in a skillet as opposed to grilling them. I don’t like marinara, so I just gave that to my husband and ate mine without the sauce. Absolutely delicious. Can’t wait for leftovers this week!
This was sooooo delicious. Made as the recipe called for.
I made these for 2 of us and they are very good. I used hamburger buns that I had in the freezer and used Smoked BBQ Ketchup instead of the marinara. I didn’t want to open a whole jar for this small amount. The Smoked BBQ Ketchup was great on the burgers. I also used jack cheese because I had in on hand. I bought ground chuck and used hot Italian sausage and the burgers were nice and moist. We grilled them but I sautéed the peppers and onions.
