This tart cherry pie also has fresh, juicy nectarines and apricots. These are drupe fruits, which have a hard stone or seed in the center of their soft exterior. The pie was excellent and very summery! Turbinado sugar is my preferred choice because it is less processed and has a lovely flavor, although white sugar would work just as well.

Added chopped onion to the beef while browning, also added some frozen corn with the green beans. Family really liked it,
Was good i had to double the recipe after we have 7 people in our house to make sure there was seconds. I also added mixed veg with the green beans was super good thank you for something fast and easy for a family always on the go!!
Reading some of these negative reviews cracks me up. I made this recipe, added some red and orange peppers, and it was delicious. An easy recipe that satisfies us all.
Quick and easy with that great homemade taste.
I used to make this for my father-in-law decades ago; my MIL showed me the basic recipe, and then I made it my own from there, but using all these same ingredients. I usually added more vegetables because I love veggies…Dad-in-law didn’t, but he loved me, so ate it “as was.” My own dear father loved it any way I made it, and was always full of smiles when I’d put a big slice of the pie in front of him.
It’s nice if you add some peppers (any colour) they can be bell pepper/ sweet pepper or even chilli pepper . Also onions. I found that it can easily be turned into a veg or vegan pie !
I have made this for years as a vegetarian version using rough chopped portobello mushrooms in place of the meat a 16 ounce bag of frozen mixed veggies and cream of onion soup. Topped with mashed sweet potatoes… it is a nutritional powerhouse and so delicious, even my pickiest grandchild loves it.
This is a good base recipe to springboard from. Although, as a common misconception, Shepherds pie is made from lamb. Cottage pie is what you have here. Traditionally, there’s peas and carrots with a beef gravy. Sometimes the mashed potatoes have green onion in them. Never grated cheese on top. Although, now I add Asiago. If the potatoes are kept whole and served on the side, you now have mince and tatties(potatoes). This IS the most humble dish that everyone in Scotland grew up with, and now cooks with their kids. This recipe warms the cockles, as long as you like mushroom soup in your recipe. You could use brown gravy mix and add Worcestershire sauce. Usually the mash on top has ridges in it from running your fork over all of it. Then pats of butter are put on and they crisp up the ridges perfectly. My daughters favorite part. Any time this recipe is changed, bettered, improved upon, shared, it’s a great thing. Maybe someone in India is enjoying this while we enjoy a good curry.
Ok this is funny…. For years when the kids were growing up and I needed a quicky meal my idea was, well just turn this whole thing upside down, leave out the cheese and add peas (frozen) never canned. We called it Hamburger Gravy. Mashed potatoes with Hamburger Gravy on top. Add any vegs you like. Kids love this!
Simple and delicious. I have made this recipe for years, although I do add onion and minced garlic to the meat mixture. For variety I have subbed tater tots for the mashed potatoes. Always a crowd pleaser and economical in these Inflationary times.
MASSIVE amount of mashed potatoes! This is Shepherds Pie with more than Double the mashed potatoes. The cheese is also a little too much. “Poor Man’s” is an appropriate title because mashed potatoes are far less expensive and way more filling than beef. Also, the lack of vegetable variety (carrots, peas, corn, anything beyond just 2 cans of green beans). Seriously, just reduce the potatoes to at least half the amount, reduce the cheese also, add at least one extra vegetable—of course then it would be Shepherds Pie (and just as cost efficient).
This is a great recipe I’ve. Added peas and corn at one point then when I made it again I added mixed vegetables it came out great !
Nothing special. Shepherds pie with a different name. Leave out soup and add layer of cheese on vegies, Much better.
I have made this for years. Fairly cheap and you can use any veggies you want. I’ve made it with cream of mushroom, country gravy, even brown gravy. I also use chopped onions and minced garlic for flavor. It’s ver versatile.
This a quick meal to put together and quite filling by itself. We make it with English peas and layer it meat, peas, mashed potatoes and cheese with a sprinkle of smoked paprika. A perfect sdish to get rid of some leftovers.
Nothing fancy here, just comfort food at its best, and a great way to use some leftovers. I think you could use any combo of veggies that suits you. Instead of canned green beans, I used some frozen mixed vegetables. I scaled the recipe in half, and baked in a smaller casserole dish. Enjoyed, would make again.
Easy and tasty meal that left empty plates for all that shared it. I’ll be sure to make this one again. I did substitute golden mushroom soup for mushroom soup.
I’m not poor but loved this anyway.
ok but not great. I used a more expensive Lean ground round. Perhaps the flavor would be better with ground Chuck. I might try again with that change.
An excellent way to use up leftover mashed potatoes which is exactly what I did. I added an onion and a clove if garlic to the ground meat mixtape skipped the beans as my husband does not care for them. You can add additional vegetables to the meat if you choice such as carrots m, celery or mushrooms. I added the cheese on top 5 minutes before it was finished cooking. Great base recipe.
I really enjoyed this recipe, I added some diced onion to the ground beef. I also substituted corn for the green beans, I am from PA and I have grown up making Shepherd’s Pie with corn, but any veggie would do. Such a comfort food recipe!
