A traditional caramel apple recipe ideal for entertaining in the fall. This dish is simple because to the use of caramel candies.
Servings: | 6 |
Yield: | 6 caramel apples |
Ingredients
- 6 Granny Smith apples
- 6 wooden sticks
- 1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
- 2 tablespoons water
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Insert wooden sticks 3/4 of the way into the stem end of each apple. Place apples on a cookie sheet covered with lightly greased aluminum foil.
- Combine caramels and water in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring often, until caramel melts and is smooth. Stir in vanilla extract. Dip each apple into the caramel and gently run apples around insides of saucepan to scrape off some of the caramel. Scrape excess caramel from the apple bottoms using the side of the saucepan. Wasn’t impressed. I guess I was expecting better
Very Delicious!!!! Next time I would put in fridge to set
These turned out awesome! I have been making caramel apples for a few years and have not been able to find a good recipe. I used a couple tips from others like, if store bought apples boil them for a FEW seconds then place them in the freezer for an hour. When I dipped the apples I held them upside down for about 30 seconds before placing them on greased wax paper. I made 16 caramel apples so I needed to store them. I did half in cello bags and half in the fridge. The apples in the cello bags melted while the apples in the fridge stayed perfect. Thanks for this yummy easy recipe!
This didn’t work out for what we wanted to use them for. I’m really glad I did a test run on the recipe two days beforehand. I wanted to make them the day before a girl’s birthday party, and then wrap them up in plastic or wax paper and gift them as takeaway gifts. But this caramel was soooo soft and sticky. I set the caramelled apple on wax paper to set, put it in the fridge for an hour, and then let it sit on the counter overnight. It was still horribly soft (I couldn’t possible wrap it up) and stuck horrendously to the wax paper. My daughters didn’t even want to try to eat it. Besides which, unwrapping all those caramels was a big hassle. I switched to a more traditional boil-sugar-and-butter-to-soft-ball-stage candy recipe, which worked better. I set the apples on cooking-sprayed Silpat sheet, and rolled them in sprinkles (to cover any stickiness and hopefully enable them to be wrapped). I give the recipe two stars because this might be a good choice to make with young kids that want to eat the apple right away. Good luck!
Great texture for dipping apples! Make sure to get the waxy coating off your apples and chill them before dipping to help the caramel stick and cool quickly.
To put an extra “zest” after I dipped it in caramel I waited until it was “dry” and dipped it halfway in white chocolate then dipped it in nuts right after the white chocolate
Very easy to do, first time making caramel apples and they turned out great – I posted a photo of mine where I covered them in crushed peanuts, mini M&M’s, Skor bar pieces and sliced almonds – And then I drizzled them with white and milk chocolate (chips melted in a waterbath) – Sold them at work for a charity fundraiser and 6 were sold before I got them to the table 🙂 Also used Honeycrisp apples along with the usual Granny Smith apples – Good for Halloween and any fundraiser 🙂
Super easy and worked perfectly!
What a great and simple recipe for a simple treat! I used Kraft Caramel Bits instead of the regular candy squares and I melted them on the stove instead of the microwave. Maybe I should have done that because the bits never melted all the way and I ended up with several “clots” of caramel. Other than that, the caramel stuck very nicely and didn’t slide very much at all. Next time I’m going to melt some chocolate chips and drizzle some of that over the caramel. Yum!!! Oh and I actually used Macintosh apples because I like them better. I save Granny’s for the pies! I also used parchment paper instead of waxed paper. You have to remember to eat these up in a couple of days. Otherwise, if they sit around too long the caramel begins to granulate right on the apples!
wonderfully simple recipe. I used small granny smith apples and was able to make 12. I used wax paper to line my pan with instead of the foil. I will make these again!
I’ve made it a dozen times. They are wonderful.
We loved these. Be sure to remove the wax from the apple so the caramel will stick better. I put graham crackers, oreo cookies, nuts, and peanuts in the food processor–separately– and rolled the caramelized apple in it.We also crushed some candy bars for a coating.(snickers and Butterfingers) Drizzled melted chocolate around the stick and top half of the apple.. YUM! After they cooled, I put them in cellophane party bags from the dollar store. Adding curly ribbon gave them a festive look. We loved making these.
I love caramel apples, and buying the name brand caramels makes such a difference! We dip our bottoms in sugar or nuts or chocolate chips to help keep them from sticking before we place them on the wax paper..
This is a great recipe! I made these with my two kids who are 8 and 6. At first I thought it would be too messy and hard, but I was wrong! These directions were very easy to follow. The apples tasted great with the caramel not gooey. My kids ate 2 each in less than 30 minutes! And my 8 year old has braces, making it hard to eat this kind of tasty treat!
Good recipe. Work quickly!!!
I followed recipe, melted on stove top not microwave, boiled the apples to remove wax….turned out aweful! most of caramel slid off, don’t know what I did wrong. What did stay on is just a sticky mess, never really set up like picture.
This recipe is perfect even if it’s your first time making caramel apples (it was for me)! The caramel was the perfect consistency plain or to roll in candy (we rolled them in chopped heath bar, finely chopped walnuts, coconut flakes, and mini chocolate chips). The caramel is soft and chewy and perfect. I substituted Granny Smiths for Cortland and Honey Crisps from a local farm which were probably larger than your typical Granny Smith, so keep that in mind and add more caramels if you have bigger apples- we barely had enough for the last apple. DELICIOUS – FIVE STARS!
Gooey and Yummy! Didn’t use the vanilla however did cook in microwave. Tried on stove but didn’t set up. Since I was making for a bake sale, I set the carmel apples in a cupcake liner sprayed with a little butter baking spray. Set in fridge for 15 minutes to cool. Wrapped them up and tied with a fall colored bow. Big HIt!
The recipe worked perfectly!! I rolled them in peanuts right after dipping. They looked like something from a cooking magazine.
simple yet easy recipe. I’ve been eyes doing caramel apples for a month…finally dove in and did it. Adding the vanilla gave it a totally pleasant flavor. Thank you. I had fun.
My youngest daughter wanted to make these and I helped her out. She only made a slight mistake and didn’t stir as often as she should have. The bauble that forms is still a mystery to me. Not sure why it did. But over all we enjoyed them.
