Ingredients
- ½ cup butter, softened
- ½ cup vegetable shortening
- ¾ cup white sugar
- ⅔ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 ¼ cups candy-coated peanut butter pieces (such as Reese’s Pieces®), divided
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, beat the butter and shortening together with an electric mixer until well combined. Beat in the white and brown sugar until the mixture is creamy, then beat the vanilla extract and eggs, followed by the cocoa powder. Beat until the mixture is even in color. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt; stir the flour mixture into the cocoa mixture until the dough is thoroughly mixed. Stir in the chocolate chips and 3/4 cup of peanut butter candies. Reserve the rest of the candy pieces.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and refrigerate the cookie dough until chilled, at least 45 minutes. Drop dough by tablespoon onto the prepared baking sheets. Gently press a few more candy pieces into the top of each cookie.
- Bake in the preheated oven 8 to 9 minutes; cool on baking sheets for 1 to 2 minutes before finishing cooling on racks.

Excellent. Soft and Chewy. I added 1/2 cup of peanut butter, for a stronger peanut butter flavour.
AWSOME!!!! I loved the recipe I did not add any candies because I had none but extra chocolate chips makes it amazing. I only make this recipe when I make double chocolate chip cookies if dry add extra wet ingredients if wet add more flour I’ll rate this five star??
I followed the recipe almost exactly (didn’t measure the reese’s pieces and chocolate chips). They are a little too sweet, but still very good. Will make them again with less sugar and use this as the base recipe for other chocolate cookies.
These are almost like a brownie cookie. Very rich. Kids loved them!
These are the best cookies ever! Soft and moist inside like chocolate cake and a beautiful crust, topped with Reese’s candies makes the best cookies for autumn, and pulling these out of the oven made my day! Thank you!
These are quite good! I like the addition of the peanut butter pieces. They do not spread out at all while cooking, so make them the size you want them before putting them in the oven!
These were a surprise as I wasn’t sure they’d come out. But they were great- not sweet but certainly tasty! Instead of shortening I substituted butter and it was fantastic! Will make again and thank you for sharing this recipe 🙂
Delicious and very rich. I am going to try them with peppermint extract and Andes mints next.
Great recipe! Only change I made was all butter (had no shortening) and less reese’s pieces, more choc chips because I ate so many of the dang reese’s pieces before hand. Frack. I was concerned while mixing the cookie, the dough was weirdly dry but they came out so good. Soft for at least 40 hours (in tupperware) but all gone. I got 36 big cookies out of the recipe and they looked beautiful with the colourful reese’s pieces on top. I also ate at least 2 cookies worth of batter, whoever said they didn’t like the batter was nutzo – delish.
Delicious! I forgot to put the extra candies on the top after putting the cookies on the baking sheet, but I think it was fine without them. Probably would be great with them too. I will definitely be making these again.
Great cookie. I used peanut butter M&Ms.
My family loved these! We used all butter-no shortening, and didn’t chill the dough either. They were delicious.
These are really really good, and so easy to make! I don’t have shortening, so I subbed all butter in with delicious results. Cook time of 9 minutes is right on in my oven-they come out soft and delicious. My cookies didn’t harden or get crunchy the next day, they stayed soft and moist. I loved them!
These cookies were a huge hit in my house! I’ve tried a few different chocolate cookie recipes & this is the best I’ve found. I’m not a fan of thin flat cookies – these stay nice & poofy and are so tasty without being too sweet! I skipped the chocolate chips in favor of extra Reese’s Pieces and they were perfect! I’ll be making these on the regular!
I doubled this recipe and didnt have any shortening so i used all Butter! Excellen cookies!! The second time i made them i didnt put chocolate chips or reeses pieces i used only reeses peanut butter morsels found next to choc chips. Excellent any way u make them!
This recipe lives up to its name! I made these cookies for a Halloween party and they were a HUGE hit. I will be using this recipe again and again and again!
These cookies are delicious! These are the perfect cookies for this time of year! Easy to make and they look festive. Yummy too! Thanks for sharing!
Great cookies! Rich choc flavor. As others noted, the pnut butter flavor isn’t very strong, so adjust to your preference. I used self-rising flour instead of all-purp flour…so left out the salt and baking soda. And came out fine! You get a workout mixing the batter, which is good since you’re going to eat alot of them once they are cooked. 😉 Will definitely make these again. Will try Heath Brickle Bits or Peppermint Patties! I doubled recipe as stated and worked great. What I love is that recipe makes lots of DECENT sized cookies…not little quarter-sized ones.
These baked up beautifully! Didn’t change a thing. They didn’t flatten but stayed a nice shape. And they taste so good!
we made these cookies for Santa, he will love them. They are soooo good. My son was able to help and everyone loves them. Thanks for the recipe
Very good! They stay soft and pillowy, like a nice chewy brownie. I made the recipe as stated with no changes, but I did have to bake mine a few minutes longer, until they looked dry on top. I topped with Christmas peanut butter M&Ms instead of Reeses’ Pieces.
