Ingredients
- 1 (16 ounce) package dried penne pasta
- 5 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- 2 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves – cut into cubes
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, or more to taste
- salt and ground black pepper to taste
- ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth
- 1 bunch slender asparagus spears, trimmed, cut on diagonal into 1-inch pieces
- 1 clove garlic, thinly sliced
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add penne and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, about 11 minutes. Drain.
- While the pasta is cooking, heat 3 tablespoons oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in chicken and season with 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook and stir until chicken is browned and the juices run clear, about 5 minutes. Transfer chicken to a paper towel-lined plate.
- Pour chicken broth into the skillet. Add asparagus, garlic, and another pinch of garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and steam until asparagus is just tender, 5 to 10 minutes. Return chicken to the skillet and cook until heated through, 2 to 3 minutes.
- Transfer drained penne to a large bowl. Pour chicken mixture over top and mix until well combined. Let sit for about 5 minutes.
- Stir in remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil, then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Reviews
I agree with other reviewers that there is not enough sauce. Very dry and bland unless you add more broth and garlic which I did. It was better but still not great. I used shredded rotisserie chicken instead of the uncooked chicken to save time and I think it probably tasted better. If I make this again, I’ll use some kind of prepared sauce or make a white wine sauce with butter. I did love the asparagus in this recipe.
A little too light for my family so I added a cup of creamy pesto sauce. It was a hit!
This was delicious. Just moved and needed a simple yet satisfying recipe after a long day. I added a few red paper flakes and a dash of Italian seasoning. Such a healthy, tasty light meal. Love this web site!!!
My family loved this dish. I did follow advice of others and make it a little creamy and I bought a rotisserie chicken and shredded it because of time. Will definitely make again. Thank you!!
LOVED IT! It was simple, quick, and delicious. Next time I’ll probably make two versions as my kids wouldn’t touch the asparagus. lol
ridiculously salty, and i had to switch the pasta to wholegrain and add in more veggies to get more nutritional benefits
Literally like my favorite dish
I used frozen broccoli instead of asparagus (because it’s all I had). I also used mozzerella cheese instead of parm. It was delicious! This is one of those recipes that you can substitute what you have and it’ll still taste good!
Simple recipe that tastes fancy. I struggle cooking asparagus, but it turned out just right. I substituted tri-colored rotini for penne. I used 1/2 vegetable stock (I was out of chicken stock) and 1/2 white wine and garnished with some fresh basil. This is definitely going into our regular rotation of dinners.
Spectacular! The whole family loved it (and even ate the leftovers). I will be making this again.
I made this with broccoli instead of asparagus. It was fantastic!
Exactly as promised. Light and tasty.
We really enjoyed this dish. We like more flavor and sauce so I made a few modifications. I cubed the chicken and seared it in the pan with onion and seasonings. Used 1 1/2 C broth and seasoned generously with garlic, garlic/herb seasoning from Costco, Unami seasoning from Trader Joe’s and kosher salt. Super easy dish and ready to eat in 45 minutes.
Addendum to my review I had to add some extra spices. I added Adobo seasoning, a bit of chicken flavor bouillon, and a pinch of creole seasoning.
It was very good. I varied somewhat by adding more chicken and a few tablespoons of butter to the asparagus.
It is awesome. The chicken broth really flavors and makes the asparagus very tender. Family loves it
Loved this meal! Easy to make and not too heavy.
I did the exact recipe and it came out delicious. I’m going to do this recipe again.
This is a light, easy pasta dish. I minced one clove of garlic and cooked it with the chicken. Then followed the recipe as written. Everyone enjoyed it.
It made much more than I expected which helps us have leftovers. Very good. Only suggestion I would have is maybe to add some sea salt for a touch more flavor.
This receipe was OK but I think it would be much better with a light cream sauce of some sort. Just seemed kind of blah to me.
