Ingredients
- 1/4 cup oat flour or whole wheat flour
- 2/3 cup old-fashioned oats
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 3 pounds firm but ripe pears, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch slices
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups reduced-fat vanilla ice cream or frozen vanilla yogurt, optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
- For the topping: Combine the ingredients in a medium bowl and work together with a fork or with your fingertips until the ingredients are moistened.
- For the filling: Combine the pears slices, lemon juice, and ginger in a large bowl. Add the sugar and flour and toss to blend.
- Spray an 8 by 8-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Transfer the pear mixture to the dish. Sprinkle the topping over the pears. Bake crumble until the pears are tender and the topping is golden brown, about 40 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature, with a scoop of ice cream, if desired.

I’ve never tried making this before. Had all of the ingredients already so I made it. It turned out wonderfully! I used lime instead of lemon and pumpkin pie spice instead of ginger (it has ginger in it), about 1/2 as much as the ginger. I also put in 1/2 a cup of dried fruit, dried cherries and cranberries and blueberries. My family loves it!
This was a perfect fall desert. Loved it.
Followed the recipe except I used 1 even Tblsp of bottled real ginger because I didn’t have any fresh (the jarred stuff is available by jarred garlic in produce sections), and did large cubes of pears instead of slices. Delicious combination of flavors! Highly recommend.

This was great! Made it tonight and DH & I both really enjoyed it. I followed the recipe exactly, using whole wheat flour. We did not eat it with yogurt or anything, we just ate it plain and warm from the oven.
iA terrible recipe. I just wish that friends of this crumble did not write glowing reviews unless they cooked like I did only to find my time wasted, the spicing overwhelming, and the timing wrong.
After reading all the rave reviews I selected this for a large crowd. It did not live up to its reviews. The ginger overwhelmed the pears and it just cried out for more flavor. I do not recommend this recipe.
I love this and have made it for a few different holidays. I usually use apples and pears for some different flavors. It can easily be done gluten free too with gf oats and gf flour mix.
This was simple to make and it was delicious! I liked being able to taste a little bit of ginger every now and then, but it wasn’t overpowering. I will definitely be making it again. My husband loved it, too.
I have this recipe so many times AND I have tried it using different fruits. Tonight I am using fresh peaches which are in season right now. Plus I will add some fresh blueberries as well!! Yummy summer dessert!
