Yield: | About 5 dozen cookies |
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine, room temperature
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon water
- Four different paste colors or liquid food coloring
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream the butter, shortening and sugar with an electric mixer. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until light. In a small bowl, stir the soda, salt and flour together. Stir the dry ingredients into the creamed ingredients until well mixed. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill the dough for at least 30 minutes.
- Divide the dough in half. Wrap half in plastic wrap and return to the refrigerator. Roll out the dough to 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut cookies with a cookie cutter of any design and place on ungreased cookie sheets about 2 inches apart.
- Put 1 teaspoon corn syrup and 1/4 teaspoon water into each of 4 different custard cups. Tint each of the four mixtures with food coloring. Stir each well.
- Paint the unbaked cookies before baking using a small paintbrush. For more fun, press cookie dough through a garlic press to make “hair” for gingerbread figures.
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Bake for 9 to 10 minutes or until cookies are lightly browned. Remove the cookies with a spatula and cool on wire rack.

Does anyone have a photo of the painted cookies before and/or after?
While this cookie tastes good, the dough is hard to work with; It crumbles when trying to roll out and scraps do not reroll well. I cannot recommend thi recipe. I did follow the recipe as written.
This is my go to recipe for all of my decorated cookies. I love the fact that the dough is not really sweet so when we decorate them with frosting and candies its not overly sweet
The cookies were great for my kids!
I added 1/4 cup more sugar than called for and this seemed to be a good sweetness. Also, I sprinkled the shaped cookies with sugar right before going into the oven. The dough started to get sticky quickly as we worked with it to cut out shapes. For the paint, I tried with 1/4 teaspoon water and without water. I liked it without the water better, but can see why you wouldn’t put much on, it does melt down onto the other cookies, so I’ll be careful the next time because I would definitely use this recipe again. The kids really enjoyed the painting.
The recipe went together well in reference to the mixing, and the taste is good, not too much sweetness. But these cookies are a pain in the neck to roll out. The dough was very crumbly, no matter it’s temperature. Although I like the corn syrup paint recipe, I will not be using this cookie recipe again.
I used this for painted cookies and for filled cookies. Rolled out and rerolled quite a few times and the last cookies was just as short as the first rolling. However, yeild of 5 dozen is way optimistic. Try 3.
Be careful to not put paint on too thick and it does spread out a little in the oven.
The outcome was beautiful Sprinkle the painted cookies with sugar for a frosty look.
I am replacing dear old Mom’s recipe with this one again next year/
My little sister and I were looking for a simple recipe for cookies. And we found this recipe. After about an hour of scrambling around the kitchen, we reached the conclusion that it was easy for kids. The cookies tasted a bit flour-y and not too sweet, and we found we had to add more sugar. But we probably just messed up 😛 The cookies looked really nice, and we only cooked them for about 7-8 minutes, not the 9-10 minutes the recipe suggested. Overall, an ok cookie recipe.
These cookies were very easy to make. I received so many compliments and requests to make more.
The dough became very dry and I had a hard time recovering it.
