Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 1/2 cups ketchup
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 3 1/2 pounds chicken legs and thighs
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic, onion, paprika, chili powder and smoked paprika and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften, about 8 minutes. Add the ketchup, vinegar, butter, Worcestershire and 1 cup water. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened and the flavors have blended, about 10 minutes.
- Pat the chicken dry and season all over with salt and pepper. Arrange the chicken skin-side down on a rimmed baking sheet. Pour the barbecue sauce over the chicken and cover with foil. Bake about 25 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to bake until the chicken is beginning to brown in spots, about 15 minutes. Turn the chicken skin-side up and bake until golden and browned in spots, about 15 minutes more. Toss to coat with the sauce on the baking sheet and serve.

This is a perfect cooking method. Chicken came out moist and delicious. I did marinate the chicken in the sauce for a few hours before cooking to let the flavors soak in.
Very flavorful recipe! If you want to make it more healthy and retain the exact same taste please see below…
Does not need any butter
Replace vegetable oil with olive oil
No salt is needed
Easy and delicious. Will make again
I’ve made this recipe several times and it’s always delicious. I do add about a third of a cup of brown sugar to the sauce.
Excellent recipe, the homemade sauce was perfect over mashed potatoes. Recipe was quick, easy, only a few ingredients but tasted divine. I also added 2 tablespoons of brown sugar to sweeten the sauce a bit (as suggested by other viewers) but that was my only change.
I’m totally making this again. Thank you, Trisha!
The sauce was not our favorite. Good in theory but just not delicious like you’d think.
Quick , easy and delicious!
These came out sooooo good. I just changed it slightly and used 1 cup of ketchup and 1/2 cup of bbq sauce and added in 1/4 cup of brown sugar and followed the rest of the recipe. Excellent and EASY.
Seriously delicious! I may never have my husband grill again.
