Here is a dish that adds taste to the usually bland cabbage because working with cabbage might be monotonous at times. This dish for pan-fried cabbage patties comes from coastal India, where coconut is in great supply. This recipe, which my grandma taught me, calls for fresh Indian spices and ingredients. Serve alongside naan or Indian rice.

Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups peanut butter
- 1 cup shortening
- ⅔ cup white sugar
- ⅔ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup white sugar, or as needed
- 2 (12 ounce) bags milk chocolate candy kisses (such as Hershey’s Kisses®), unwrapped
Instructions
- Beat peanut butter, shortening, 2/3 cup white sugar, brown sugar, milk, eggs, and vanilla extract together with an electric mixer in a large bowl until creamy and smooth.
- Sift flour, baking soda, and salt together in a bowl. Gradually fold flour mixture into peanut butter mixture to form a smooth dough. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate until chilled, about 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Pour 1/4 cup white sugar into a shallow bowl. Scoop dough into 1-inch balls, roll balls in sugar, and place 1 1/2 inches apart on baking sheets.
- Bake cookies in the preheated oven for 6 minutes; rotate cookie sheets and continue baking for another 3 minutes. Press a chocolate kiss about halfway down in the center of each cookie. Bake for until chocolate begins to melt and lose form, another 2 to 3 minutes. Cool on wire racks until chocolate hardens, at least 3 hours.
- Refrigerate dough at least 1 hour to make dough easier to work with before shaping balls. This also helps retain the shape when baking and avoid too much cracking when adding kisses.
- Prep kisses by unwrapping foils and lining them upright on a plate or cookie sheet for easy transfer to cookie dough. Baking dough too long before adding kisses can cause kisses to fall out of the cookie dough when cooled. Kisses need to bake long enough to adhere to the cookie base but not to the point that they lose shape. Do not over bake!
- Stacking cookies before chocolate has fully cooled and hardened will cause them to squish and loose shape. Freeze immediately when cooled. I’ve kept them up to 2 months and they taste as fresh as the day they were baked. Try also carmel-filled kisses or other chocolate candy (add caramel-filled kisses during last 2 minutes bake time and increase cooling time by at least 1 hour).

Perfect!
The recipe is wrong as you do not need 2 -12 oz. bogs of Hershey’s kisses. We unwrapped both 10.5 oz. bags and had exactly one 10 oz. bag left over. The cookies were delicious and I made them exactly like the recipe was written. They were beautiful and delicious. Definitely a keeper for us.
Great recipe! They turned out perfect!
Personal preference, but this recipe is too much peanut butter for my taste; it overpowers the chocolate kiss and any reference to it being a “cookie”. I do agree refrigerating the dough kept mine from cracking and crumbling (or maybe it was all of that peanut butter).
I made the recipe exactly as printed. Was disappointed with the dryness of the cookie, probably will not make again. I have had these cookies before and the cookie was moist with more flavor.
DON’T CHANGE A THING ABOUT THIS RECIPE!!! Perfectly soft with a crisp sugary outside! They stay soft for 5 days without bread in a baggie.
Perfect recipe. I made these for my Christmas cookie trays this year, and they were the favorite. Everyone loved them! The only change I made was to roll in red and green sugar, instead of white sugar, to make them Christmasy. Will make these year round.
I made no changes, and it was wonderful! Although, for some reason the chocolates fell out, even when I let them cool all the way before putting away. Could you please give me some advice?
Yum! Used heart shaped chocolates for Valentine’s Day!
Substituted 1/2 the shortening for butter, as I love butter in cookies, and I live by the motto “butter makes everything better”. Just the soft, tender, peanutbuttery goodness I was looking for!! Thanks!
Meh…… I followed recipe as written, refrigerated and all, but these are just to crumbly for my liking. Only reason why I gave them 3 stars is because the kids are still eating them. Will look for a different recipe for this type of cookie next time!
Best ever!! I did make one alteration, not on purpose. I thought I had milk and I didn’t….. I used Rum Chatta! They were delicious! I am sure they will be just as amazing with milk.
Amazing! I used a cup of butter instead of shortening (because I didn’t have it). They turned out perfectly. I was a little leery about putting the kiss on BEFORE the baking time was over (per the directions) but that was an awesome tip. They got just the right amount of “melty” and they stay soft even when the cookie cools so combine well when munching! This is a real saver. Thanks!
ok. i am an amateur baker to say the least. I have lots to learn. However this recipe was so easy to follow and i followed it to the “T”. Turned out great and definitely will be making these again. I still have my family to “approve”, but i think it’ will be a hit…lol.
I put the dough in the freezer for about 20 minutes instead of an hour in the fridge, and they turned out perfect! I will definitely be making these again.
I am surprised at all the 5 star reviews for this recipe. For me, the cookies were way too dry — even difficult to form them into nice balls. That was my first clue. I think they need more shortening, butter, milk — something! Also, mine were not very sweet — I think the recipe translated incorrectly when I increased from 4 dozen to 6 dozen. Be careful when using that tool here on this site. Time-consuming cookies to make; expensive (nearly $10 for Hershey’s Kisses) and ultimately quite disappointing. Look elsewhere to make delicious Peanut Butter Blossoms.
Awesome recipe! They came out perfect!
make these all the time
The only change I made (I’m not sure this counts as a change to the recipe) is that I put the chocolates on the cookies after they were done baking. I’m glad I did because I think the chocolates would have completely melted had I stuck them in the oven for three minutes. Thank you for the recipe! It was my first time making these cookies and they came out super yummy! I’m looking forward to making them again soon : )
Delicious
This was the best peanut butter blossom recipe I’ve ever tried! Soft and delish!
