Level: | Easy |
Yield: | One large loaf |
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/4 cup)
- 2 tablespoons caraway seeds, optional
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Set a rack in the middle level of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt and stir well to mix.
- Add the butter and rub in until the butter disappears into the dry ingredients.
- Stir in the caraway seeds if used and the raisins.
- In a small bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg together and mix into the dough mixture with a rubber spatula.
- Turn the dough out on a floured work surface and fold it over on itself several times, shaping it into a round loaf. Transfer the loaf to one cookie sheet or jelly roll pan covered with parchment or foil and cut a cross in the top. Bake for 15 minutes then reduce heat to 350 and cook for about 15 to 20 minutes more, until well colored and a toothpick plunged into the center emerges clean.
- Cool the soda bread on a rack and serve with plenty of sweet butter and bitter orange marmalade.

This is the best soda bread. Turns out great every time.
Moist, easy, fantastic! You must make this every March
I have been making this recipe for, maybe 20 years. A long time. It comes out beautifully every time. if I’m not mistaken, I think the original recipe may have made two loaves. Now I make two loaves, but separately. And, it kicks up some flour, but I use the food processor to combine the dry ingredients and butter. Then I transfer it to a wide mixing bowl and follow the directions for the caraway seeds, raisins the buttermilk. This is an easy recipe and, for me, foolproof.
Wonderful and easy. After reading the reviews, I changed one thing. I only used 1 T of seeds. Also, I do not think my oven is spot on so, I cooked by internal temperature instead of time. The center was 185 degree F when I pulled the bread out, which added additional time. It was perfect. THANK YOU for the recipe.
Very easy. Husband loves this. It isn’t too sweet so he likes it with lunch and dinner. Reminds me of a Southern shortcake. Tip: I cut through dough all the way to pan in cross pattern. Helps it rise in the oven. Yummy.
Really easy and delicious bread! I used raisins and it is yummy toasted or as is. Didn’t have any caraway seed. Next time I will try that. The family loved it!
Total winner and super easy. Perfect every time.
It’s easy and delicious! We like that it’s a little sweet. Definitely a crowd favorite at our house!
I get rave reviews every year that I make it!
This is an awesome recipe! I’ve made it for years and every year my husband looks forward to it. I like a lot of raisins and I use golden and regular. Comes out great. It’s real easy to make and takes very little time to mix.
