Ingredients

  1. Ice cubes
  2. 3 ounces tequila
  3. 2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice
  4. 1 ounce Simple Syrup, recipe follows
  5. 1/2 to 1 teaspoon orange liqueur
  6. 1 tablespoon Lime-salt-sugar, recipe follows
  7. 1 cup sugar
  8. 1 cup water
  9. Zest of one lime
  10. 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  11. 2 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add tequila, lime juice, Simple Syrup and orange liqueur. Cover and shake until mixed and chilled, about 30 seconds. (In general, the drink is ready by the time the shaker mists up.) Place Lime-salt-sugar on a plate. Press the rim of a chilled rocks or wine glass into the mixture to rim the edge. Strain margarita into the glass.
  2. Put the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. (Alternatively, heat in the microwave.) Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
  3. Blend together lime, salt and sugar in a small blender or mini food chopper.

To the one reviewer who queried about maybe using the stupid plastic lime container and the juice from it because it’s so much easier than going to the trouble of squeezing FRESH limes, let me just say, please don’t invite me to your house for margaritas and key lime pie, because I’m not going to be there.

This is fantastic as written. I ran out of limes after the first batch so used fresh lemon juice which was great too. Perfect recipe! No substitutions needed.

I use limeade. Use in place of squeeze lime and simple syrup. Never had it better
Jessica Hanna
Way too much lime

Easy and perfect margarita!!

I use a 3–3 ounce lemonade and limeade mixture, tequila, triple sec (though Grande Marnier is preferred) and no symple syrup and Stirrings margarita rimmer.

I’m sure fresh lime juice is preferable but any comments on the so much easier bottled lime juice?

Delete the simple syrup, increase the orange liqueur to 1oz, add lots of ice, and you’ll have a classic margarita, not boozy koolaid.

Just made my first “from scratch” margarita. Never buying ready made again! This is SO easy and SO much better!!

Great margarita recipe!! Not too sweet and very refreshing. We added club soda to make it more of a ranch water too.
