Low-Sodium Taco Seasoning

  4.3 – 173 reviews  • Mexican

This low-sodium taco seasoning is produced without salt using a blend of spices and a tiny bit of cornstarch for thickening. It nearly resembles bottled taco spice from the shop.

I tried a few recipes and they always seemed to miss something. This was a WINNER!The only difference I did was add 3/4 tsp of salt.I made steak and chicken nachos. My husband LOVED the taco seasoning. Will never buy prepackaged taco mix again.

Excellent seasoning mix. I made it low-sodium, adding about 1 tsp of Lite Salt, and used it to season ground turkey with chopped onions and bell peppers.

My husband is on kidney dialysis and must closely watch his sodium intake. Once you get used to eliminating as much sodium as you can, most things – even the lower sodium ones – often taste too salty. I purchased salt free chili powder (check…many contain salt) and made as directed. I have a double recipe stored in a glass jar. I use 1 pound ground beef, 2 generous tablespoons Taco Seasoning II, and 3/4 cup water. Prepare as you would the packaged mix. If you have smoked paprika it is a nice addition. If you aren’t used to being very low sodium, you may want to sprinkle in a bit of salt, but it will likely be less than you are getting in the packaged mix.

This is my go to seasoning I love the fact I can adjust the salt and let the natural flavor come through

Haven’t made this yet but love the ‘adjust’ feature. Went to favorite grocery store for the packaged kind, changed my mind about buying when there was some guy coughing and maskless checking them over. I already had ingredients so figured I would try this, thank you!

I had to add more garlic and a bit more cayenne for my family’s tastes, but other than that it’s phenomenal.
Michael Miller
Excellent recipe! I doubled the cayenne as suggested in other reviews. Used 6 tsp (2 TB) on a pound of ground chicken – it was delicious!

I made this a couple months ago and have used it a lot. It is very good and will definitely keep a large batch made up from now on. No more store bought here. Made it as submitted.

simple and tastes great.

Super simple and a hit with the family! Hope I only use homemade from here forward!

I really like this taco seasoning. It stores well in the cabinet and I like the way it seasons the meat.

The only thing I didn’t add was the Cayenne pepper.

This tasted fine, but I had to add some salt to the mix after tasting it in the ground beef I made for tacos. I think it would be fine to use to sprinkle on different things for some seasoning, but for us, salt is needed for taco meat.

If you’re looking for something similar to the taste of McCormick but homemade AND gluten free this is for you. I’ve used this recipe for years but I’m just now getting around to rating it.

This was a very good medium heat taco seasoning I used salt free chili powder and made with ground turkey Fantastic. Nice you can always turn up the heat.

It is really delicious but you have to add a LOT to get any flavour when adding to meat. Honestly, the value just isn’t there. I’m much better off just buying a package of taco seasoning at the store. I will have to keep looking. The favour was great so I gave it 4 stars it just isn’t worth the effort, in my opinion.
Heather Bright
Simple and effective- make it regularly- just amp up the cayenne! Thanks!
