Ingredients

  1. Salt
  2. 1 pound whole-wheat fettuccine or pappardelle noodles
  3. 2 cups chicken stock
  4. 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  5. 2 lemons, zested and sliced
  6. 1/2 cup tamari sauce
  7. 1 bunch chives, chopped into 1-inch lengths
  8. Freshly ground black pepper
  9. Hot sauce, optional

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil add the pasta and cook until just shy of al dente. Drain.
  2. While pasta water comes to a boil, heat the stock, oil, sliced lemon and tamari sauce and allow to reduce over medium-high heat, about 7 to 8 minutes. Toss cooked pasta with sauce for 1 to 2 minutes to absorb flavor, add in reserved zest and chives then serve as first course or a side dish. Spice it up with pepper or hot sauce to pass at table.

I saw this in a commercial and thought it would be a nice summer meal, not too heavy. It was the tamari sauce that really threw me off. I’m not a huge soy sauce fan so 1/2 cup is A LOT of soy sauce. After adding that it no longer looked right and had a horrible concentrated soy smell the entire time it was cooking. My fiance and I both decided to give it a try but we were pretty sure pizza was going to be the menu for dinner instead. But, I was wrong.

It’s still not the best thing I’ve ever eaten but it was actually much better than it smelled and the lemon drowned out the soy sauce, lemon was a bit much actually. I ended up just spooning some of the sauce over the noodles in a bowl and mixing it instead of stirring into all the sauce. I also made grilled chicken to go along with it and added parmesan shavings which helped with flavor.

If we try it again I will be using a quarter of the tamari sauce, half the lemon, and adding a lot more flavor with garlic and more parmesan cheese.

I was super excited to make this, to shake things up, and when I ate it, it was WAY too bitter.

The amount of lemon was fine for me, but my family didn’t care for it. Next time I’ll use one lemon and saute garlic with the oil first.

It was quick and easy, and delicious!!!!!.

Loved this dish, however next time, I will use only 1 lemon instead of 2 as the “Lemon-y” taste was VERY over powering! I also added some flour to the soy sauce/stock mixture to thicken it a little.

Loved it!!! But did make two changes, I juiced one lemon and added that instead of all the lemon slices. I tossed a few lemon slices into the noodles at the end for a little zing and color. I did not use whole wheat noodles, just the regular ones. Yummmo!!!! My hubby the chef likes it ,too!!

I agree with most people here that there was too much lemon. I think I would cut the lemon by half next time. Otherwise, good side dish.

After watching Rachael make this on TV. I decided to try it out. I couldn’t remember all the stuff that need to go into this dish so I looked it up. I was nervous when I saw so may hits or miss on the reviews. I tried it out and it came out really good. Instead of putting tons on lemons in the broth and soy sauce i silce 1. I added garlic too. It was a hit and my husband ask for it again soon.

It sounded delicious —in theory. However, the lemon left a bitter aftertaste. The tamari sauce did not work with whole-wheat noodles.

We both took one bite, swallowed and looked at each other. It was so awful we ended up laughing, dumped it all down the disposal and ordered pizza for dinner.

Made this last night – based on other reviews I decided to cut the lemons down to one (zest and slices). Was absolutely fantastic. Just enough lemon flavor – served with a shrimp, portabella & garlic saute. Yum!
