My grandma used to prepare a Czech pastry similar to this one, complete with a homemade prune filling and streusel topping. To make it work with the bread maker, I made a small modification. The effort was worth it for them!

Ingredients

  1. 2 large green tomatoes, sliced 1/3-inch thick
  2. 2 teaspoons white sugar
  3. ½ teaspoon salt
  4. ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  5. ½ cup milk
  6. 2 eggs
  7. 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  8. 1 cup butter

Instructions

  1. Season each tomato slice with sugar, salt, and pepper.
  2. Beat milk and eggs together in a bowl. Pour flour into another bowl.
  3. Gently press each tomato slice into flour to coat; shake off excess flour. Dip tomato slices into egg mixture, then press again into flour. Place breaded tomato slices onto a plate while breading the rest; do not stack.
  4. Melt 1/2 cup butter in a large pan over medium heat. Place tomato slices in melted butter and cook until golden brown on one side, 5 to 7 minutes. Flip and cook on the other side until golden brown. Add more butter as need while frying.

Delicious! I added some “Slap ya Mama’s” seasoning to the flour, and made a creamy chipotle sauce to pair with them. Great on their own or added to a grilled cheese. Reheated nicely in the air fryer the next day as well.

It was an awesome recipe. I did make a couple changes. 1) Added onion powder and garlic powder to the sugar/salt/pepper mixture. 2) added Pepper and garlic powder to the flour.

I changed the recipe a bit bc of reading complaints about bland breading and falling off. I added Mrs dash to the four and I did 3 dips- first in flour then in egg w/mayo (no milk) then in flour breadcrumb Mrs dash mixture. Fried in coconut and avacado oil! Delicious!! I didnt lose any breading stuck like glue and the mayo instead of milk added a little zip to them!! Normally I don’t change recipes this much but glad I did!

I made these for dinner with pinto beans and cornbread. They were the BOMB-DIGGITY! I used Kentucky Seasoned Flour (I’m a KY Girl!). It has all the basic ingrediants in this recipe, plus a few extra spices for kick! I served them with Ranch Dressing and they were a HIT! The plate was clean before I could get a pic!

I have made these several times however, I made substitutions. I did not like the flour. I used Italian bread crumbs and used butter for the frying.Yummy.

These are delicious! I used Panko instead of a double dip of flour and added chopped fresh basil to the Panko. They were crunchy and flavourful. I used half butter and half safflower oil to fry them. They turned out beautifully golden brown and the tomatoes were a perfect texture. Thanks for the recipe!

Amazing! I already had a dregde made with half flour and half corn meal, inion and garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper and black pepper. I added same ingredients to wet slur egg and milk plus the sugar. amazing!

I made these tonight, WOW, it reminded me of my Southern upbringing in OK… I didn’t use butter, just margarine I had & added a small amount of Olive Oil … They brought me back to my ”childhood”… My Fiancee had never had FGT, so he ate a few & liked them!! Will make this again!! I’m growing my own tomatoes, so they’re really Fresh ”Off The Vine”… Yummy!!

These were delicious. That touch of sugar added a whole new twist. And since it’s breaded in flour and not the traditional corn meal, you don’t get that gritty texture (not that I don’t like them made with cornmeal also), but this is definitely a nice change. Even my husband are them (he’s the one who doesn’t like cornmeal) and has asked me to make them again!
