a typical meal from Newfoundland and Labrador, a province of Canada. Without a doubt not for anyone following a low-fat or low-sodium diet. Absolutely delicious! Add boiling lemon peas or your preferred steamed vegetable as a side dish.

Prep Time: 30 mins
Cook Time: 1 hr 5 mins
Additional Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Servings: 6
Yield: 1 7×11-inch casserole

Ingredients

  1. cooking spray
  2. 8 ounces rotini pasta
  3. 1 pound ground beef
  4. ½ pound bulk mild Italian sausage
  5. ¾ cup chopped onion
  6. ¼ cup chopped celery
  7. 1 clove garlic, minced
  8. 1 tablespoon minced green bell pepper
  9. salt and pepper to taste
  10. 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  11. 1 (14.4 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  12. 2 cups shredded Italian cheese blend
  13. 1 ½ cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 7×11-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.
  2. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add rotini and cook until tender yet firm to the bite, 6 to 8 minutes; drain. Run cold water over pasta to stop it from cooking further.
  3. While the pasta is cooking, cook ground beef and sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat until completely browned and crumbly, 7 to 10 minutes. Add onion, celery, garlic, and bell pepper; cook and stir until vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from the heat and stir in tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. Let cool for 5 minutes.
  4. Spread pasta over the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle Italian cheese blend over rotini, then pour meat sauce over top. Cover the dish with heavy-duty aluminum foil.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and sprinkle Cheddar cheese over the casserole. Continue to bake until Cheddar has melted, about 5 minutes. Rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Hearty, meaty & really good! I had low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised – this is comfort food! I used ziti pasta, drained the fat from my cooked meat before adding the veggies and my own tomato sauce and would definitely make again! – Aug ’23

I made a few changes. More garlic more onion, more Italian spices, more vegetable pasta and way less cheese. Healthier and very tasty

I was excited to try this-I thought it was just okay. It was worth making one time. Thank you for the recipe!! 🙂

I did it just as listed but I had homemade sauce in the fridge so I used that instead of the can of tomato sauce.. it was a very good, hearty meal right away. Mine had a lot of flavor, But the calorie count is way high beware

We enjoyed this rather easy to put together meal. Next time I will add some seasoned salt to it.

I enjoyed this dish but decided to add some green olives to it, which complimented it nicely and gave it a little savory kick.

I followed the recipe and tweaked one thing. No one in my family particularly likes Italian sausage due to the strong flavor. So I used ground beef only and then added Italian seasoning the whole mixture afterwards to get the flavor but not where it’s overwhelming. It came out good and would make this again. This was a staple in my family meal time as a kid. Growing up in Ohio this is a definite must. I live in Texas now and made it for my husband and his family for the first time and they loved it.

Wow!!!! What a delish meal! I substituted 1can of rinsed and partially mashed black beans for the meat, and turmeric for the garlic. I also used the cheese I had on hand which was a cheddar blend, mozz, and a little bit of Mexican blend. I will make this dish again and again. Five stars and more!

I added Italian seasoning, red pepper, and mixed the cheese together with more Italian seasoning. Used the whole box of pasta…delish

This was delicious. I added some Italian seasoning and that kicked up the overall taste.

I didn’t spray nonstick oil on the bottom of the dish as the recipe called for, instead I coated Irish Butter on bottom & sides. I used 1 lb of the Mild Italian Sausage. I sautéed the fresh vegetables in Irish Butter. I also changed up the diced tomatoes & used Fire Roasted Tomatoes instead. That was a Hit. Instead of baking the Casserole another 45 minutes when everything in the Casserole was done, I switched over to Convection Bake for only 15 minutes. I rated this recipe 5 stars. Bon A Petit

I made this last night and substituted beef products with ground turkey and turkey sausage because my Daughter in Law is allergic to red meat. They LOVED it! It’s an easy dish to make on a weeknight so I will add this to my go to dishes that are delicious and Easy!
