We had a lot of jalapenos and cream cheese that needed to be used up, plus we love jalapeno poppers, so I came up with this recipe to make mashed potatoes with a spicy kick. The fiancé requested that I prepare this every time we have mashed potatoes after devouring three portions. The finest mashed potatoes I’ve ever had, despite being a tad hot!

Ingredients
- 5 red potatoes, cubed
- salt to taste
- ½ cup butter, divided
- 5 green onions, chopped
- 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced, or more to taste
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup sour cream
Instructions
- Place potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and transfer potatoes to a large bowl.
- Melt 1/4 cup butter in a skillet over medium heat; cook and stir green onions, jalapeno pepper, and garlic until soft and fragrant, 3 to 4 minutes. Mix green onion mixture and cream cheese together in a bowl; add remaining 1/4 cup butter and stir until butter melts. Add sour cream and mix well.
- Mix cream cheese mixture with the potatoes using a potato masher until most of the lumps are gone; season with salt.

This is so good. Followed the recipe exactly and was NOT disappointed. The little chunks of jalapeño and green onion are fantastic. Will absolutely make it again!!
I followed the recipe, but decided to double it on a whim. I am so glad I did. Absolutely the best mashed potatoes I have ever had.
We like Betty Cricker’s garlic jstant mashed potatoes (in the packet) so we used that for the mashed potatoes…. but we failed to consider the portion & thus the delicious cream cheese sour cream goodness mixture was a little much. (AMAZING but so unhealthy.) Next time we’ll cut that in half or make 2 packets of potatoes.
Made it with the skins left on the red potatoes. Otherwise no change. Mashed potatoes are awesome. Jalapeños just kick them up a few notches!
Followed this recipe but added an extra half jalapeño per the suggestions. Would not recommend. I guess it depends if you are using fresh jalapeño or slices and if they are hot or mild. I used fresh. 1.5 was too hot even for my spice lovers. I would say stick with the recipe as written or add a little at a time and add to taste.
I so wanted to love this, was so excited by the ingredients but I was quite disappointed at the result. I found it quite bland – my 2 year old loved it tho. I added a few ingredients to make more flavoursome for my partner & I, so all was not lost. 3 stars for a great base recipe though. Thank you.
Delicious! My husband and kids loved it. No left overs here. I followed the recipe exactly. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
Wow! It’s a favorite in the house now! Thanks for the recipe!
I made this for Thanksgiving. I used jalapeno cream cheese since I didn’t have jalapenos. It turned out fantastic!
Very good,just added more garlic.
Best mash I ever made! No changes to recipe.
Really creamy and smooth with layers of flavor that you typically don’t find in mashed potatoes. We’re about mid-range on spiciness, and in the future, I’ll add more jalapeno. The recipe didn’t say whether or not to peel the potatoes, but next time, I’ll probably just leave the skins on. Think that’ll add more color to the dish. Love mashed potatoes, and this is a good recipe!
