Ingredients
- Kosher salt
- 1 pound elbow macaroni
- 8 ounces ground beef sirloin
- 8 ounces sweet Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 shallots, diced
- 1 clove garlic, peeled and smashed
- 1 1/2 cups tomato puree, such as Mutti
- 2 cups freshly grated Parmesan
- 1/4 cup mascarpone
- 2 cups baby spinach, torn
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the macaroni and cook for 2 minutes less than the package directions, 3 to 4 minutes. Drain well.
- Heat the olive oil in a large straight-sided skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground sirloin and sausage and cook, breaking up the meats with the back of a wooden spoon, until cooked through and browned, 6 minutes. Stir in the shallots and garlic; cook 2 minutes. Deglaze with the tomato puree, add 1/2 teaspoon salt and stir to combine. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for another 4 minutes.
- Add the macaroni to the sauce, sprinkle the bare pasta with the Parmesan and mix well. Stir in the mascarpone and spinach and cook an additional 3 minutes, until the sauce is creamy and the spinach wilted.

This is such a simple and easy recipe. I used to make the boxed pasta but it always upset my husband’s stomach. I tried this recipe and he loved it. It’s not as flavorful as the seasoning is different, but you can always add seasoning to your taste. That is what makes this recipe so great as it is so versatile. My husbands likes it the way it is so that is how I make it.

Needs a tad more seasoning, but I’ll take the advice of adding a little bit of Italian spices to add a little zing. Makes a lot!
Absolutely loved it and took the advice of someone below and added oregano, parsley and red pepper flakes. I also added extra puree and seasoned the beef with Italian seasoning and garlic powder. It was a hit in our house!
I have always liked the combo of beef & Italian sausage or even Mexican ground sausage. I don’t understand the rude people who leave such horrible reviews. Slop? Really!! Get ideas, technique and tweak the recipe for Christ’s sake! Make it your first own. I added Italian seasoning, ancho Chili pepper because I like it, bell pepper, why not? I did sauté the onion and garlic first for a bit than added the meat. I prefer doing that. It’s ragu or bolognese pretty much. I used cream cheese mixed with a little 10% cream instead of mascarpone….didn’t feel like buying a big tub. Maybe if I were making tiramisu. I used two packs of micro green pea shoots as I don’t care for spinach. It was delicious!!! If you have nothing nice to say………
Thought I would try something different than my own home made version. I expected a lot more than this flavorless slop.My husband threw it out- and requested I make usual version.. this is gross, and lacks flavor..So dissapointed in Giada, and it’s not the first recipe to dissapoint,I doubt I’ll try any more of her recipes…- always a big let down.
I found this recipe to be completely bland and dry. Had to add double the tomato purée to make it tolerable.
Add oregano,Italian parsley,fresh basil and teaspoon of red pepper flakes.
Flavors were good but I felt that there was too much macaroni. I think that 12 oz would have been better providing more coverage for the sauce and a better balance with the meat.

Fabulous! I didn’t have any mascarpone or shallots. I subbed cream cheese & purple onion. For so few ingredients this is a super tasty dish!
