How to Steam a Crab

  2.8 – 5 reviews  • Shellfish Recipes

Ingredients

  1. Crabs
  2. Beer or Vinegar
  3. Crab boil seasoning

Instructions

  1. Get a black steamer. Put crabs in water. Add seasoning. Put more crabs on top. Let them steam for 40 minutes. When you put them in they are blue-green, but wait until their shells are orange-red and their bellies turn white. Then you can take them out, they’re ready to eat.

I have to agree about the recipe being wrong. Steam the crabs for 12-14 minutes max. Be sure to add Old Bay seasoning to the water. Once steamed, let the crabs cool for about 15 minutes and begin the picking process. We freeze any crab meat we will not be using for our recipe.

This is exactly how we steam crabs. We live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and eat crabs on a regular basis. Steaming crabs is extremely easy and fun. If you haven’t tried it yet you definitely should. Great times with groups of friends.

You will end up with mushy crabmeat if you boil crabs for 40 minutes. They should be steamed for 9-12 minutes. They should also be seasoned.
