Hot Onion Dip

  4.6 – 234 reviews  • Hot Cheese Dip Recipes

Every party starts with this first course, and it’s ridiculously simple! Do not be afraid if you dislike onions a lot. Although it is not the dish’s primary taste, onion gives it the perfect finishing touch. Serve with cocktail toast or crackers.

This is my “go to” recipe any time I entertain or am required to bring an appetizer. It’s the easiest thing in the world to make and it’s always the first to be eaten when we’re at a gathering. I don’t change a thing. I don’t even mix the ingredients. I add them all and then plop the dish into the oven. After about 20 minutes, I stir it all up. Then I cook it for another 15 minutes. I have brought this dip to events at least a dozen or so times through the years and there’s never been any leftovers (boo!) and there’s ALWAYS been a minimum of 3 people who ask for the recipe. I’m almost embarrassed to say how simple it is. Also, I am not an onion person and I love this dip. The onion flavor is pretty subdued.

Made it exactly as the recipe says and it’s great! My buddies loved this for the Super Bowl and it was very easy to make.

I’ve been making this recipe for over 15 years now. Adding things like crab meat, artichoke, green chilies, Frank’s Red Hot, or even smoked sausage are all great additions to an already great recipe.

This is a great recipe. I use shredded parm instead of grated. It’s delicious with Frito Scoops!

I made this in individual ramikins to allow each person to have their own dip in these Covid days. Sautéed the onions in 1 TBS butter with a bit of salt, almost to the point of caramelization. Added 1 package tiny pancetta cubes (Trader Joe’s) and about 2 cloves minced garlic. Rave reviews and not a bite left in anyone’s dish at the end of the night! I cut down the recipe to 1/3 for the number of people I was serving.

Delish! We loved it with mini crostinis. Only thing I would change is adding a couple dashes of worcestershire and a few pinches of beef broth base.

I love this recipe. I have made this multiple times and everybody that has had it loves it as well. I’m making it again today. It’s one of my all time favorite recipes on this site.

We will be making this again! It was delicious on crackers and veggies. Everyone loved it and wanted to know the recipe.

I made it as-is and it was so good! I made it a second time and added some marinated artichoke hearts, and that was good too. It’s really good on bacon-flavored Ritz crackers, but they’re hard for me to find.

This was absolutely fantastic! For a twist, I added a pinch of salt and one clove of garlic. That really set it off very nicely and counterbalanced against the sweetness of the onion. This is such a beautiful and versatile snack!

Amazing DIP & huge hit at a recent party we attended! Simple to prepare, home smelled so good while it was baking and had to “promise” to give other party go-ers the recipe A keeper for sure!!!

This is delicious. I cut the recipe in half and instead of using cream cheese, I used 2% cottage cheese that I put in the food processor , processing until smooth. Everything else remained the same. It’s a great dip but can also be used on pasta.

This onion dip was good. It turned out flavorful, and it browned nicely. I did add artichoke hearts, which I think made it yummier. Next time I think I would saute the onions to develop the flavor a little differently.

This is the best thing ever!! So easy to make and everyone is obsessed with it! I do add some minced garlic because who doesn’t love garlic. I have also made it in my crockpot. Low for a few hours and it’s perfect! Not as great as when baked in the oven but when I bring it to functions where no oven is available it’s still just as good!
Frank Peterson
it should of had artichoke hearts too

Made it as the recipe detailed but cut the servings down for 2 people. It ended up separating. Had decent flavor. Likely will try it again.

I make this dish every time we have a gathering of folks. It is always the hot of the party. I serve it with Fritos Scoops though.

Will definitely make again!!! Only did 1/3 of the recipe as it was huge and I was already making 2 other dips, but added: 1/2 cup sourcream 1/4 Cup green onion (for colour and because I had some on hand from another recipe) 1 jalapeño chopped (removed pith) It was lovely

Disappointed since it had pretty good reviews. Luckily, I cut it down to 16 servings. It was much to “solid” of a dip. It needed to be thinned out with something. Though the onion flavor was good. Will definitely not make again..

Really liked this, but I did modify it into a French Onion Soup Dip. Instead of one onion, I used 4 onions and caramelized them beforehand. While caramelizing, I used half a can of beef broth(poured over time while they were cooking down). Gave it that something extra.
Luke Manning
Delicious! I sauté the onions but other than that stay true to the recipe. So easy and so delicious!!
