Homemade Chili Crisp

These berry oatmeal scones are the simplest and best-tasting ones ever. Because of how simple they are to make, I’ve been doing it since I was nine years old.

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 25 mins
Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 20

Ingredients

  1. 1 ½ cups vegetable oil
  2. 1 ½ shallots, finely chopped
  3. 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  4. 6 whole star anise pods
  5. 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  6. ¾ cup red pepper flakes
  7. 1 (1 1/2 inch) piece ginger, or more to taste, peeled and finely chopped
  8. 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  9. 2 teaspoons white sugar
  10. 1 teaspoon shiitake mushroom powder
  11. ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Bring oil, shallots, garlic, star anise, and cinnamon to a simmer in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Continue simmering, swishing oil around occasionally, until garlic and shallots are browned, about 20 minutes.
  2. Mix red pepper flakes, ginger, soy sauce, sugar, mushroom powder, and salt together in a medium bowl.
  3. Strain shallot mixture through a fine mesh sieve over red pepper flake mixture. Let garlic and shallot pieces cool in the sieve, then stir them back into the infused oil. Discard star anise.
  4. Pour into a glass container with a secure top; chill until ready to use.

This is delicious! We made it exactly as written, and I wouldn’t change one thing. We have used this over chicken corn chowder and cream of crab soup and it adds flavor and heat. I can’t wait to try it on something else.

Tasty and just as good as the jar on the table in our local Thai restaurant!

This is delicious. I couldn’t find mushroom powder, so I pulverized a dried shiitake mushroom. This was delicious on an omelette. Thank you for the recipe.
