Ingredients

  1. 2 pounds lean ground beef
  2. ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  3. 4 cups milk
  4. salt and pepper to taste
  5. 1 teaspoon onion salt

Instructions

  1. Gather all ingredients.

  3. Cook ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat until evenly browned and crumbly, 7 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and sprinkle flour over top; stir until beef is evenly coated and all fat is absorbed.

  5. Return the skillet to the stove over medium heat. Stir in 2 cups milk; cook and stir until warm and beginning to thicken, 3 to 5 minutes. Add remaining 2 cups milk; cook and stir until desired consistency has been reached and gravy comes to a boil, about 5 minutes. Season with onion salt, salt, and pepper.

Ugh, such a comforting meal! My mom made this countless times when I was growing up, always a family favourite. I sauteed a small onion in some butter to start until it was cooked down, then added some fresh garlic. Cooked the beef, added salt and pepper and then drained the meat. After adding the flour and milk I did add a beef bouillon cube for more flavour as other users suggested and then more salt and pepper to taste. It turned out absolutely delicious! We had it over mashed potatoes with butter, sour cream, chives, milk, garlic powder salt and pepper 🙂 will definitely be making this again and again

My father was in ww2 they used to eat this in the mess hall ,they called it SOS ….on a shingle.he used to make it when he came.home.I like it But I would rather use bacon,crumble up.and I like to make the gravy first,brown the flour With salt and pepper,add milk ,and when it starts to thicken add crumbled bacon.it is delicious.

This was super easy and incredibly economical to make. My family loved it. Will make again for sure. Definitely a comfort food. I did add beef bullion cubes and some garlic powder, served over mashed potatoes.

Well I have been eating this mostly for breakfast for sixty years as a thirty year Marine and retired for another thirty .The only difference is garlic powder is used in the military version and it is called SOS, which your recipes did not call it for good reason. First time I ate it was on a cold winter day in the field and it was the only food canister that was putting off steam.

As is this needs a lot of jazzing up. Try adding two teaspoons of chicken bullion, a small block of tomato bullion or a tablespoon of tomato paste, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, a teaspoon or more of Italian seasoning, and a teaspoon or more of dried parsley along with the salt and pepper that’s called for. I didn’t want a full cream gravy so I used mostly water and probably 1/2 cup of 2% milk. Now it has some flavor. Not bad for a recipe that calls for mostly pantry items. Also, I used 85% ground beef and took out most of the fat.

The original recipe is a good base. Here are the additions I made and came out very tasty. Approved by a teen, a toddler, and husband: -One whole onion chopped and cooked with meat (instead of onion powder) -3 cloves minced garlic (instead of garlic powder) added to meat when it was almost done -1.5 tsp pepper -1.5 tsp beef better than boullion -0.5 – 1 tsp all purpose seasoning. We will be making it again! Good for a night you don’t have much time. We did it over garlic mashed potatoes this round, but will try over egg noodles next time.
