A filling skillet supper, this canned corned beef hash comes together quickly. It tastes fantastic with fried eggs and fantastic with spinach on the side.

Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 4 stalks celery, diced
- ½ large carrot, shredded
- ⅓ white onion, diced
- salt to taste
- 3 cups split peas, rinsed
- 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- 1 ham bone
- 5 cups chicken stock
- 2 cups water, or as needed
- 1 cup diced ham
- ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Melt butter and oil in a stockpot or Dutch oven over medium-low heat. Add celery, carrot, onion, and salt; cook and stir until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in peas and garlic. Nestle ham bone into the pot; add stock and diced ham. Add enough water so that liquid is about 1 1/2 inches from the top of the pot; bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low and cover. Simmer, stirring every 30 minutes and scraping the bottom of the pot, until peas are mostly disintegrated, about 2 1/2 hours. Turn ham bone and skim the surface for fat once every hour.
- Remove ham bone from the pot and place on a cutting board until cool enough to handle. Remove any meat from the bones and cut into bite-sized pieces; stir into soup until warmed through and season with salt and pepper.

Don’t mind that lady. My grandmother didn’t put garlic or onion on anything. Some people like garlic tho. I put garlic in my capn crunch. I had so many leftover bones form a smoke I just had. Wild boar bone. Still cooking but I don’t dislike any of the ingredients so I’ll eat all of it. Good job not specifying how much salt and pepper to use. Consumer prefrence. And she also didn’t notice it is stock not broth. I thing it makes all the difference in the texture. Just water? Like dirty pea water?
Wasn’t exactly like what my mom made growing up, but pretty close. Came out good
Very yummy soup !!!! This one of mine all time favorites. I did add my own spice tho
I will definitely be making this again. I increased the onion to 1/2 but will be increasing it again next time. I also increased the amount of carrots and celery quite a bit. I also added a 12 oz can of jalapenos which gave it a nice strong kick. I also added about 6 or 7 pieces of bacon.
Very good recipe, but don’t add BUTTER.I get ham with some fat on it,taste is scrumptious
I made it just like recipe except i didnt have any celery.. But i also added a cube of frozen sofrito that i had from a previous meal. I added too much broth i think cus it little more watery than I like but it still good. I also added leftover veggies that i had from night before..
Kept right with the recipe. I liked it, but I have to say not as well as another one on this site. “Split Pea Soup” had so much more flavor!
Was basic recipe I made with vegetable broth and left out ham bone as we have vegans in our family will split our portion then add some ham to ours
it was the most flavorful split pea soup I’ve ever had! And that’s coming from a true danish girl!
used yellow split pees, was only available.
I will make again. Will use this every time I have a ham bone. Did not add water, used one pound split peas. One 32 oz container chicken broth and one 14.5 oz can of broth for 46.5 oz total, Added possibly a touch more garlic and carrot. Salt very lightly. Tossed everything including ham bone in my slow cooker set on low. After 5 hours cleaned off the ham bone discarded the bone and added one cup more cubed ham. Let cook for another 2 hours. In was just great. I change items only slightly to narrow the mix down to a store bought standard pack. No waste. A great creamy split pea soup.
Not bad! Great way to make use of the Easter ham bone
Delicious! Just like what my grandma used to make!!!
Easy and Yummy!
This is delicious. No changes need to be made. At the end of cooking, the peas weren’t totally disintegrated, so I used a few short bursts of my immersion beater to make it creamier.
This turned out amazing! I used one box of chicken stock and water for the rest. Also added a couple chopped parsnips and probably double the amount of onions, celery, and carrots since I wanted it to be denser in veggies. Husband loved it!
I tweaked this by adding a pound of ham and onion soup mix. And a lot of pepper. Mine was probably 6 stars.
This soup is delicious! I liked it just the way the recipe describes.
It turned out to be so good! I did do double the amount of everything. I also used a little more chicken broth then water. Thanks for sharing your recipe!
First time making split pea soup. Came out very well! I did mine in a soup pot as the bone was fairly large but otherwise followed instructions. The family loved it.
Making it for the first time I made no changes to the ingredients and I’m glad I didn’t. This Split Pea Soup recipe is absolutely delicious. Thank you
